Weighing a Switch to a Mac

Actually I want too buy a Macbook pro, the problem is that they are Core Duo's I'm afraid that with mass migration too x64 architecture, that software support may evaporate in a few years, with the first intel macs getting orphaned, the thing is that the core duo is blazingly fast and that these laptops can run top notch software for like 5 years(but you may not find any new software in 2, leopard is already fully 64-bit, its backward compatible, but future releases may not be.). Core Duo's seems to contain everything except the x64 support, I mean the Core 2 only adds 64 bit support but is not really much faster (maybe 20%) but will be the new standard.

The worst situation is that apple has given no indication when they are going too upgrade the macbooks to merom, some claim that apple will ship as soon as merom is available in bulk(late august, early september) while others claim December or early 2007 at best.
The problem is that I need a notebook now, and that I have alot of money too spend, but want too spend it on a (relatively) future proof machine!

Tiger
Leopard
And what's next.....Elephant
Rhino
That wouldnt make any sense would it.

Try to follow the natural progression
10.0 Cheetah
10.1 Puma
10.2 Jaguar
10.3 Panther
10.4 Tiger
10.5 Leopard

Hint - They're all cats ;)

EDIT - If I had the need for a macbook I'd buy now.
