Weight Loss Thread 2014

Had finger prick on Thursday which said High. Then had blood taken. Results today were:

*Total cholesterol of 6.8
*Triglycerides 1.1 (good)
*HDL 1.3 (not bad but should be higher)
*LDL 5 (too high)

First test I have ever had so can't compare to pre-LCHF. I am continuing on LCHF per Tim Noakes who tweeted that I should carry on as I have only been back on the wagon for 6 weeks. I have never felt this great in my life and clothes keep getting bigger. Also no heart disease in my family.

Staying away from all the fad-diets like LCHF and trying to have a decent life-style of good balanced food and fitness. Since May 2013 I dropped from 99kg to 72kg and dropped from a size 44 to a size 32 (which are now getting to big).

I think people should really ask themselves the question: Is your diet a quick-fix or can it become a healthy and sustainable life-style? Many people on LCHF have lost a lot of weight but are incapable of passing the most basic fitness test. I think there should be a good balance of both. Would love to hear comments from people who went on LCHF without the intention of exercise (or perhaps to hear the opposite, that at some point in time physical activity starts playing a role as it becomes easier to do).

I started my lifestyle change in April 2013 when I was at 164kg, size 48. Today my weight is 98kg, size 36. I lost the majority of the weight by cutting down on carbs, sugar and general meal portions (calorie counting) and by drinking lots of water. Without any exercise I managed to get to 105kg. I started exercising 7 months ago and have been on a ketogenic diet for 5 months now: I jog 8km and do upper-body weight training every second day. Resting heart rate is sitting at 46 bpm (was 80 bpm 5 months ago)

That's very impressive. To me it came as a shock when I almost went triple-digits and just could not figure out how I got there. What is your speed to the km when you jog (i.e. how long does it take you to do the 8km?).

I think one benefit a Noakes diet has, is that it makes it very easy for people to cut out carbs / processed food. I get the whole part of "let's eat like a cave-man", but at the same time we should take into consideration that most food you get from your local supermarket is not organic, most fish is full of heavy-metals and most poultry is force-feed and stuffed with all sorts of of medication. If you have never watched movies about the produce-/meat-industry, watch Food Inc and you will think differently about high fat/protein intake.

The suggestion is, of course, to eat organic and well sourced food. In fact, in the Noakes cookbook, they disallow certain fish due to mercury levels.

It is, however, very damned expensive, and I generally eat organic vegetables when I can find them, but more often just your run of the mill stuff from Food Lover's, and meat-wise, yeah, probably not a good history there... Don't eat much meat though, and the majority of my fat comes from olive oil, which is healthy.

My pace isn't that great tbh, best is 52 minutes. Keto is definitely not for HIIT, unless you want to burn muscle for energy (or do some carb cycling). I certainly don't want to look like a caveman :D

Hi All,

Just want to share my experience.

30 days ago i weighed in at 130kgs for my 1,78m height.

I started a diet / lifestyle change by DrKats (www.drkats.co.za) after seeing the results of my two friends.

Everybody is different so theres a body type that you fit into based on your food choices. You are identified by that, then you do a detox and then you follow a meal plan best suited to you. LCHF diets work for a while... But not for everyone and they are not sustainable.

DrKats formulates your plan as you go along.

I lost an incredible 13kgs in the 1 month.

My breathing has improved, my back no longer pains, I am able to play more often with my kids... And best of all my clothes are actually gone very loose for me.

I've only done moderate exercise occasionally, although she does recommend 6 x 30 min cardio sessions a week. I've played the occasional 35 mins of soccer with my mates on a social level and found that it tends to make you sweat more than just running on a treadmill, plus you're breathing fresh air.

I am enjoying eating the foods that are good for me and I am stayin away from whats bad.

I also found that my mind is clearer and I am able to think of ideas and put them into action with better concentration.

I strongly recommend a visit to DrKats (she formulated her lifestyle change based on her own weight loss)

She is based in Durban and travels to Jozi occasionally to give people feedback on their plans.

Good luck

If I friggen hear one more time that LCHF is not sustainable in gonna kill someone

Refined carbs are like crack... some people are addicts... they don't want LCHF to be sustainable!

I'm one of those addicts. It's definitely sustainable but like alcoholism, you'll always be an alcoholic. Got to avoid falling off the wagon. It's possible. Just so hard sometimes.

Man, you are everywhere. If I didn't know better I would think you are Noakes himself

I would think that with the exception of a few, endurance athletes would not embrace a LCHF. While I have read that some marathon/ironman runners are burning insane amounts of fat and manage to sustain it, I doubt that the regular guy wanting to do a 21km or marathon would really struggle finishing without going with carbs during the race (I am totally ignorant here, but I would not see myself at the half-mark chowing down some HF over carbs to refuel the tank and have immediate access to energy). I agree, for the regular guy, casually running at 6:30/km this would make zero difference.

Nope, quite a few ultra endurance athletes are doing it. Raynard Tissink was the first to work with Noakes on LCHF for ironman.
Your burst speed is worse on LCHF but your sustained endurance is better.
So you wont be setting any records for a 5k run but your 21/42k would be better.

Whilst I'm glad that you've lost weight, I've had a look at that website and I can only wonder why Tim Noakes gets called a quack when there's other doctors out there like this.

Personally I see no reason why LCHF is any less sustainable than a diet promoted by someone that's developed the usual "products" to support their weight loss philosophy

I dont want to downplay what you are doing and if it works for you that is great.
I personally wont get involved in anything that requires you to buy their branded products though.
Its like "the diet everyone is talking about" you had to get some magical injections and take a bunch of supplements with it which only served to make them more money.

I would be very careful with "GP doctors" who become weight loss experts without any post graduate qualifications and in depth knowledge of physiology, biochemistry, endocrinology etc.
Using "untested" injections and "branded" shakes is not a lifestyle change for yourself but sustaining the opulent lifestyle of the service provider

Mmmmmmm... BPC.. I've missed thee..

haven't had an FFC for a few days, left my unsalted farm butter in Jozi and only have salted with me at the moment :(

hopefully my Battle Brew MCT oil will have arrived by the time I get back to Jozi tomorrow
