Weird ADSL issues

I'd appreciate any help on this, as it's driving me insane.

I got my ADSL installed two days ago, and at the moment it's a 512k line with a Telscum Premium Combo modem/router. Speed has been decent, but I have the following problems:

* Streaming videos barely work. YouTube videos in particular just freeze after about 20s and don't seem to load any further.

* IMAP mail folders no longer connect. POP works fine though.

* I can no longer connect to any IM services with Adium, whereas it used to work perfectly before.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to MYADSL Ardua! I suspect that your MTU setting might be the problem - search for a prog DrTCP/IP on the net and set the MTU to 1492.

Thanks for the welcome and the help. I tried the MTU setting, but it didn't seem to have much effect. Then, on a bit of a hunch, I checked the router's settings to see if it had a firewall, and it turns out it did. I turned that off and my problems have disappeared. Everything's working great.

Thanks again.

Yeah, you don't have to tell me. They really are a PoS, mine couldn't even hold its sync for more than +-20 minutes. I took it back to Telkom today, got a refund, and got myself a Billion 7300G. What an improvement: WiFi works correctly, no more sync issues (3hrs uptime and counting!) and far more configurable. Plus, it was about R200 cheaper.

And as a bonus, it looks like the sort of router Darth Vader would use. Seriously, anybody thinking of getting ADSL could do worse than go for this router, and whatever you do, DO NOT buy Telkom's Premium Combo router. I speak from experience.

funny, i got the combo and it works 100%, even managed to set up port fwd for the torrents..

I'm happy for you. Clearly your line is more amenable to the combo's erratic syncing ability than mine is, and if you're happy with your purchase that's all that matters I guess.

But as experiences vary, and my experience with that PoS router was entirely negative, I'm happy I made the choice to switch and I haven't looked back since doing it. Going from never making it past 30 minutes without a dropped connection to having been continuously online for 3 straight days now is a fairly decent improvement, wouldn't you say? One thing's for sure, I'd still never recommend that router to anybody.

Grrrr... I hate the combo router. Vlad M your days are numbered... that router is gonna kill you in your sleep

Sure, I agree that experiences vary, I was just relating mine. BTW, how did you manage to get a refund, i thought the router came with the 24mnth contract?

As far as I know they are branded Billion routers with their Telkom Firmware....

Is that not correct???

no thats not right ( not totally anyway.)
I used a 10.0.0.2 billion ( telkom )
and the 192.168 Ip
its the same thing.
and if you are unsure just download the firmware from billion and flash it.
(and when it blows take it back no problem)

I will flash it but Telkom will come up with the excuse that its not a Telkom Modem anymore cause its got Billion Firmware on it.

Sorry your warranty is void... :D :D :D

So basically i can take this one back and tell them i want the billion?

BTW, how do i know if i am losing sync, the dsl link on the routr is always on, only flashes for a few secs when i power off the router and power it back on.

on the combo? F**k that... im not gonna get into this...that router always syncs on the clients side.
rather take it back and ask for the billion. its muuuuuuuuuuch beter

? You're not gonna get into what? I thought it would be quite easy to tell if I'm losing sync?

just did some searching on this forum - seems some people had better resulsts with the marconi than with the billion.

gangstarr im not being contentious - i'll go exchange this router if the billion is better, i just dont want to have to go back to get the marconi again if the billion turns out to be worse.
