I've got a DLink DSL-2500u and am having constant issues with it.

it works perfectly fine most of the time, but on some days, it just seems to get bogged down. The pings are usually in the 1ms range, but when it doesnt feel like it the pings are all over the show:

Here is a log of a few ping sessions:
Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 12, Received = 7, Lost = 5 (41% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1528ms, Average = 219ms

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 1405, Received = 1366, Lost = 39 (2% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 3753ms, Average = 695ms

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 154, Received = 106, Lost = 48 (31% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 3829ms, Average = 301ms

No idea what causes this, and its becoming more and more of an issue.

I am only running PPPoE and the normal NAT firewall on the router, with DHCP, DNS and so on being handled by a Windows 2012 R2 server.

Devices on the network include:
1 x FreeNAS box, running Transmission, Plex, SABnzbd, CP and SB.
1 x Windows Server 2012 R2 running DC, DHCP, DNS, IIS etc (yes, yes i know that its not ideal, but there really is very little heavy lifting done of the box currently so I dont think this is slowing anything down. Pings to this box are consistently < 1ms
3 x Windows 8 PC's
A couple of Android and iPads

I had at one point noticed that the network would slow down specifically when Transmission was uploading, and tonight I have also noticed more issues while uploading to Facebook.

Please could someone help me figure out what cause these issue...

Mine does the same, going to replace it with something decent soon. Upgraded firmware, downgraded firmware etc nothing helps, and mine did this from day 1

that sucks major ballz :/ any decent ADSL modems to go for? The simpler and cheaper the better. I would even be quite happy with just a basic USB modem, as I am looking at getting PFSense up and running, so will just use that as a gateway.

Will probably use a old Billion I have that worked flawlessly for the last 7 years. Just went the Dlink route as I had some line sync issues last year and thought it was the old billion packing up, turned out to be a exchange issue in the end. Suppose any other modem will be better than this one lol

and tonight all is perfect again... have torrents downloading smoothly, pings are in the 1-2ms range. I have the DSL-2500u HW Ver. T1 so had a look at the dlink South Africa FTP site, and saw that there was a newer firmware than the one I had.

Updated things, and everything is running quite smoothly so far. The config pages seem to load a whole lot quicker. I was frequently getting HTTP400 errors regularly in some of the iframes of the config UI, and these seem to have gone away with the latest update.

Will keep everyone updated.

PS. Link to the firmware is here: ftp://ftp.d-link.co.za/dsl2500u/Firmware/Hardware Version T/
I used the latest one in the folder called SIP Firmware

so, after one night of relative stability, we are back to the usual up and down...

@irBosOtter: If you take a look at the screenshot, you will notice the top menu missing, with an HTTP400 bad request. Do you also keep getting these sort of errors? Most of the time, a simple refresh sorts these issues out, and it would seem that the errors get worse whenever the router goes into its weird laggy state.

Once again, these problems seem to get increasingly bad as the number of devices on the network increases. Could this be caused by packet collisions?

Does the DLink show you CPU info? I've seen those long ping results before on some dodgy routers that have 100% CPU running.

unfortunately no CPU utilisation info :( I also suspect that it is a load related issue, but with no way to diagnose it, my hands are kinda tied. If it is load related, would putting the router in to bridge mode help at all?

DLink has agreed to take the unit in to investigate, and are offering me a DSL-2750u loan unit in the mean time. I will be taking it to them on Monday, if I do not manage to resolve the issue myself before then (quite unlikely)...
