Weird DVD drive problem

Did I get shafted with a copy-protected CD ?

Bought the double CD set 'Legacy : Absolute Best' by The Doors.

No warning labels on the CD cover about copy protection to be found.

Inserted disc 1 - tried to rip - WMP 10 froze , restarted and now I'm not able to play any music CD's

Still able to play DVD's

Drive in question is a NEC DVD_RW ND2500A.

Who distributes the CD, Sony/BMG/Gallo ?
it may have installed a root kit which you would have to remove

WTF is a root kit ?

rootkit is anti-copy software that installs on your puter without your knowledge - Sony made it famous!.

It's my DVD drive that perished.

Maybe the drive saw the cover of that cd, i would also have perished
