The POP server is live. You cannot ping it because it has been set not to respond. Try to telnet it by typing the following into your command prompt:

telnet pop3.telkomsa.net 110

You can do the same with the SMTP server on port 25

I think your problem lies with Internet Connection Sharing. You need to give a little bit more info on your network. Do you have any Internet access on the machine you are currently failing to send mail from? Do you have ICS running on the one that is directly connected to the Internet? The more info, the better...

I assume you are an ADSL user and not a normal 56K dialup user, or are you? A simple solution (assuming you are indeed an ADSL user) would be to make a new PPPoE connection on the other machine. But we still need more info to help you. Do you have a HUB/Switch? How is the 1st PC connected to the modem?

etc.

Cheers
Ant

Also, what OS is running on each PC & what Service Packs are installed, do you have a firewall on the lan PC (before creating a PPPoE)?

alright..

the telnet works fine, gives me an OK
this is the main machine from which i am typing now, full access to the net atm, gateway pc does have ICS running on it directly connected..

i am indeed an ADSL user, i could try a new connection, atm my network is just a crossover cable and the modem is the USB pots.. the strange thing is that the gateway pc will receive the email, ive tried firewall settings on/off etc..

gateway pc is running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 , main pc is running Windows XP Pro SP1

PS. Both pcs have been reinstalled from scratch, still same problem..

Hi there...

Read this, it might help...

You receive an "Unable to find the e-mail server" error message when you use an ICS connection in Outlook 2002 or Outlook 2003

SYMPTOMS
When you send or receive messages on an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) client, the following error message may occur:
Task '<Account Name> - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0D): 'Unable to find the e-mail server. Please verify the server information in your account properties.
Microsoft Outlook can send and receive messages without any problems on the ICS host computer.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because Outlook cannot resolve the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) and Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) names of "mail" from the ICS client if you use a Microsoft Windows-based computer that is configured as an ICS client in a small network and if the ICS host computer is connected to an Internet service provider (ISP) through a cable modem.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, change the POP3 and SMTP server names. To do this:
1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
2. Click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
3. Click your Internet e-mail account, and then click Change.
4. Type the fully-qualified domain names of the POP3 and SMTP servers under Server Information of the Internet e-mail service of each ICS client. For example, type lh1.rdc2.on.wave.home.com instead of mail for the POP3 entry on the Servers tab of the Internet e-mail service.

NOTE: If you do not know your POP3 and SMTP's fully-qualified domain names, contact your ISP to obtain this information.

5. Click Next, and then click Finish.
To determine the correct name of the e-mail server, have an e-mail sent from the host and verify the header information for the server name in the Received or Message-ID sections.
MORE INFORMATION
Some cable modem services do not accept the simple name of "mail" for POP3 and SMTP with an ICS client. The ICS host computer can use "mail," but not the ICS client.
APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
• Microsoft Outlook 2002 Standard Edition
