Good Day

I had posted in the previous weeks about moving from one host to another and that is now complete.

I have an issue that I need help in pinpointing where the problem lies. I use a CellC sim inside a Vodafone inside a k3565-Z modem. The modem is then plugged into a Huawei D105 router and then both my macbook and iPhone connect to it wirelessly. This has been the life and despite appalling speeds I have been surviving. Now the issue is I could open my site before without any issues. Now when I try to open my website as per normal on WIFI the site does not open 9 times out of 10. On rare occasions it does open but its rare. When phone is using WIFI and i open the same site still no joy.

However when I use my phone as hotspot or just open the site using data on my phone (Have an MTN sim using afrihost data) then the site opens up immediately. Even emails I send from my domain on CellC fail to send but when I switch to MTN they send immediately. This happens though only with my domain and any emails sent on WIFI (from my gmail or icloud) or any other site I open on WIFI opens up just fine??

I'm really stumped as to where the problem lies. Maybe someone well versed in these things can offer some insight. :(

Maybe he DNS for the domain name change has not propagated to Cell-Cs servers yet. Wait another day or two. (When did you switch over to the new host?)

(I could be wrong with this, though...)

You mean Cellc. The MTN shown there is mobile but I was using wifi which is Cellc. If I was to switch on to MTN the site would automatically work. I moved about 3 weeks ago and after a week the move seemed complete. May I add that I have cancelled the afrihost account however in my client one it still shows pending. Could that be the reason and I'd have to wait till the month is over for my site to work on Cellc. Someone offline suggested my ip could be blocked by my new host due to entering incorrect Cpanel password several times or some other similar reason.

Yeah sorry, I did correct that shortly after posting.

If you did cancel the Afrihost account without waiting for global DNS propagation to take place, some DNS servers will not be able to identify the host. So, Cell-C would still have the old IP address, but the Afrihost server won't respond because the account is cancelled. I'm not too sure about the technicalities, though.

It normally takes a few days for global propagation to take place. After that, it should work as you'd expect it to.

Might also help to run ipconfig /flushdns from the command line.

I tried the Mac equivalent of that (sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder) and it actually worked. I was able to open my domain. the subdomains however still do not open. So perhaps there are some DNS issues that need ironing out somehow.

Site looks awesome. Viewing it via Cell C SIM in my router.

Seems like the whole world can but I can't. Site opens now and then but subdomains still fail. Emails too fail sending. Guess I will give it a few days for the account to be fully cancelled on Afrihost side then see if I still have issues even then.

ive seen similar dns issues.. what worked for me was a dig +trace to the domain.. on your cell c connection from your mac terminal run the following command:

dig your domain +trace

this should come up with a result and may resolve your issue.. if you get no result, do the same using the hotspot on mtn/afrihost sim, switch back to cell c, clear your cache as you have before and retry the command..

Thank you so much. I will try that and report back.

troubleshooting your domain, this is a strange name server configuration.. did you transfer the domain over to the new host as well, or just the hosting..?

I transferred both the domain name and hosting over. I will appreciate any insight to your findings even if it's via inbox. As the problems I am having are not common and strange indeed.

i inboxed you..

Can you manually configure the DNS server of your computer to 8.8.8.8 and then see if it makes a difference when viewing your website.

I had tried that before but no luck. Will try it again an see if anything changes

So I tried several tests but the were more informational than problem solving. Then I decided to try changing DNS settings from the default router ones to google ones. Lo and behold my site and all my subdomains opened. none failed. Even did a test sending email from my main domain to another email address and that too worked.

I tested on mobile (iPhone 5S) and the subdomains wouldn't open. So there too I went to WiFi network and changed the DNS settings to google ones. Once again my sites started opening. I'm surprised though that using google DNS servers work but what I had before which hadn't changed, didn't work. What does this mean?

simply means that the resolvers cell c makes use of for their internet connected clients is unable to resolve dns for your domain..
