Okay, I recently moved from a "N"ew wireless provider back to Telkom because the speed is getting so slow I can walk to the servers to get the TCP packets and still be faster...

I must add my 2c, Telkom implemented my DSL And other requests in record time, with precision and not one single problem. I am impressed.

Anyway, now back to my problem. Im using a 1GB account from Axxess to get started, with a view to switching to the Uncapped Express.

However I have the following problem. Numerous websites, for example Facebook.com, kulula-air.com, FNB's online banking etc.

1. I try to browse these on the DSL, and Firefox just says "Waiting..." and never gets reply. Other websites open in about 1/2 second.

2. I plug in my 3G modem and hit F5 - they open fine.

3. Switch back to the DSL connection, Hit F5 - Firefox again just says "waiting.." and never gets a reply.

It is getting so bad now that I have resorted to purchasing an Openweb Openbrowse account so I can use their proxy otherwise 60% of the sites I visit just never open. It cant be PC (Ubuntu 8.10) because the same browser works fine on the 3G or other connections - just on the DSL about 60% of the sites I try to open just say "Waiting" the whole time.

I suspected it might be the transparent proxies, but if it were these other people would complain? Does anyone have any ideas what could be doing this?

I'm using a D-link ADSL modem, hooked up to a Senao wireless access router on a Telkom 4mbit line with the axxess 1GB shaped (IS DSL) account.

[UPDATE : Seems now I cant use POP3 either, my email client works fine on the 3G account but on the IS DSL from Axxess it says Connected and then times-out saying there was no reply. Similar to the HTTP problem. Interestingly SMTP to my external SMTP servers works 100% on the DSL line. ]

Same here... switched back from Neotel to ADSL, telkom performed very fast in re-enabling my ADSL connection. Have uncapped express (fibre) from Openweb account.

Anyway, have similar problems with some sites (eg BBC markets page often opens blank, and (*cough*) katzbabes likewise. However both work fine if I go via my proxy in the US.).

Since yesterday, have been having issues with some sites taking forever to open ... eg some google sites (adsense, analytics). Currently trying to watch a movie trailer from YouTube and it's taking forever.

Does anyone know if

1. there are issues with the network this month?
2. what's wrong with Internet Solutions' proxies that some sites open 'blank'. Later on, they work fine.

thanks.

The plot thickens. I plugged the DSL modem directly into my Pc (bypassing the wireless router) and I can browse all websites now perfectly.

So, it seems my Senao Access Point Router thingie is doing more than just passing TCP packets around... so far I see nothing obvious in its menu settings.

AHA! I fixed it! :-)

After almost pulling my hair out, i figured that it must be like the AP/router is not getting a response. But its random. Thats when it dawned on me, the only random thing could be the replies - in this case the size of the replies! I checked my MTU on the router and its set to 1500

I changed it to 1492, restarted the access point and voila! my DSL is working 100% and all websites are opening, pop3 is working...

I am now going to celebrate by making coffee. Case closed.

Okay, I should know this but can't find the setting....

I have a bunch of computers, connected as follows:

computers --> LAN --> firewall (IPCop) --> ADSL modem

Where exactly did you change the setting from 1500 to 1492?

My firewall says both network cards (red and green) are running at 1500.

thanks, Ian

Hi,

I changed it on the my router/modem which in this case would be the firewall.

Since its doing NAT for your clients, the MTU on its connection to the internet is what matters, your clients one should not matter as your packets are translated and sent out on your behalf by the firewall.
