Struggling with a friend's laptop. It's a Lenovo L480 Thinkpad. Basically brand new. It seems to have been doing this since new. Trying to figure out the issue before sending it in.

When typing it types other characters as well as the chosen character. E.g.

When typing "s" it types "s2a1", "d" it types "D2a1", "f" types "f4a1". The numbers as well, typing "2" gives "s2a1". 1 doesn't work at all. Numbers 5 and 6 works as normal. It seems the two "centre rows" on the keyboard works as normal. e.g. 5, 6, t, y, g, h, as well as the bottom row z, x, c, v, b, n, m.

What I've tried with no success:

  • Language settings are correct. Changing them makes no difference.
  • Uninstalled keyboard driver via Device management, restarted, no change.
  • Updated all drivers on the laptop using Driver Booster, restarted, no change.
  • One of the websites suggested that numlock is set to always be on. Checked with Regedit, but it is set to be off.
  • Updated BIOS, restarted, no change.

Anything else that I can try??

I've searched online, and there are many questions about the same issue, but no answers that work....

Sounds like a hardware fault. Could be crossed wires on the PCB behind the physical keyboard.

Would be difficult to verify this without proper test equipment though. I think you're going to have to send it in.

Does the behaviour persist when using an external USB keyboard?

Plugged in a different keyboard now via USB, and it does something different...

Adding 1 after every key you press. Every key. E.g. Typing in MyBroadband comes out as M!y1B!r1o1d1b1a1n1d1.

So it seems the 1/! key has an error? Seeing as "Shift + M" then shows a "!" ?

Last check I'm going to try is running a Linux distro as a live USB...just to confirm it's a hardware issue...

And of course can't get it to boot from USB. Grrrr...

Will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for trying to help though. I am going to tell him to send it in, as I reckon that it must be hardware related.
