hey guys...

got a bit of a weird problem that I have no clue how I could go about fixing. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-TX37GP. its a bit old, but nice and light and does the trick when I need to watch some movies and stuff.

Recently, I have been having an issue with it and it goes as follows: I turned the lappy on, and tried to watch a movie, but there was suddenly no sound (from the built-in speakers). I proceeded to plug in headphones thinking that the speakers had "died". The headphones were also very quiet but they did work (I had to turn the system volume up to 100% and max out the volume in VLC to hear anything.

Then a couple days later, I was watching something with headphones plugged in and the audio got very loud for a second or 2 (as loud as it should be having maxed out the volume), and then went down to the quiet level again.

Eventually, I unplugged the headphones when it was loud, and lo-and-behold, there was audio coming from the speakers once again. It was there for a few seconds, and then disappeared again.

Another day later, the problem went away completely. I thought it was gone for good. Then a couple days ago (about 2 weeks after the original problem) it came back again (exactly the same symptoms).

I have taken the laptop apart (carefully, with a service manual) and made sure that everything inside is connected. The volume is still jumping all over the show (low the one second, high the next...)

Any ideas on what else I could try? I have tried new drivers, etc... but realistically, this seems to be a hardware problem as even the bootup audio (the BIOS splashscreen) works intermittently.

Sounds like a loose connection. So you have several options - send it in for repairs, kick it, or bake it. Option 3 is the most fun and has ±80% of working (no jokes). Option 1 is the most boring and expensive but has a 99% chance of working. I wouldnt put money on option 2 though :p

Regarding the baking: firstly, bake what? only the mobo, or mobo and something else, etc...

Secondly, I would rather have a laptop with no sound than none at all... any risks of screwing it up ewven more?

Bake the mobo and everything attached to it. Very difficult to do with a laptop though with way things are laid all over the place. I guess you could also try and trace the sound ports to a controller and check for any lose joint or lack of solder.
