I have a Netgear DG384GV5 adsl router, latest firmware etc.

When plugged into one site, it works 100% - you plug it in, it syncs and gets IP from ISP and works.

On other sites, you plug it in, it doesnt get IP. You need to go to Connection Status and click Connect. Then after 30 seconds or so it gets the IP. But then it doesnt work. You can resolve hostnames, but you cannot connect to anything. I can ping google.com and get the IP, but all the requests to get there time out, and also for anything else.

A Dlink router works 100% on all sites, so it doesn't look like the line issue. Any idea?

Everything on the netgear has been reset to factory bar the ISP name and password.

most netgear factory setting are incorrect for south africa
thses settings must be changed
vpi 8
vci 35
Multiplexing Method LLC based
DSL Mode adsl (g.dmt)
hope this helps

Like I said, the Netgear works on some ADSL lines and not on others, the ones it doesn't work on a DLINK works on. The only difference is just the Netgear is set to autodetect between ADSL and ADSL2, whereas the DLINK is set to ADSL (g.dmt), the VCI/VPI settings are the same on both as expected.

I'm thinking that since the router isn't working on lines which have been installed recently (new areas) that maybe the Netgear auto-mode is picking up ADSL2? yet its not active so the routing doesnt work? Pure speculation ofcourse, I'll set the NetGear to force ADSL1 and see if this fixes it or not.

Manually set your IP address, Gateway and DNS server on your PC - check details on modem, once connected - Know issue; also set Wireless to WEP if you are unable to connect wirelessly.

What I hear here is kind of upsetting. You go to the TELKOM shop get a new NETGEAR router, install it using the disk provided. You then expect it to work. Now from what i hear here it sometimes doesn't. So If you know (nothing like I do) and not on this site, what do you do? The agents at 0800375375 don't tell you any of the above. I am having connection problems (router 10 days old) and it may be this

There's nothing wrong with the PCs or Apple's that are using the Netgear. The diagnostics screen in the Netgear admin webpage also cannot ping a site (but does the DNS resolve correctly).

Also dont ever use WEP, it can be cracked very easily. Also start using WPA2, WPA1 was breached by a Japanese reseach group in the last few weeks. I'm not sure if they have made their exploit public yet.

I have exactly the same router and it only works if you set it to ADSL and not auto/ADSL2+ modes.
