Weird problem

Heya Fraggles!
This happened today, just half an hour ago: Me's surfing on the main computer in the study, my wife on her laptop in the kitchen (as we all know that's the place where women belong anyway). Suddenly she can't connect to any websites anymore. So we check, disconnect her, reconnect again, all fine ... except she still can't reach any websites. I must admit I'm not the most clued up person when it comes to techie stuff but this is strange isn't it? :wtf:

Okay, before you ask:
Yes, I restarted the router.
Yes, we disconnected her wifi and connected her with the router again.
Yes, wireless connection is established.
No, I'm not running some mega download, blocking alll our bandwith. In fact I shut down my Firefox so her lappy should get full bandwith.

So I'm at the end of my wits. What can we do now?

Phone your ISP as you may have too many connections running at the same time. This happens even although it seems that you have signed out.

check that the dns is set to automatic under properties in the wifi settings but why not rather put the laptop away? surely there is better things the female can be doing? cooking? cleaning etc? :)

Wifey's connection worked flawlessly until an hour ago. We only got her set up yesterday and today, in the middle of a surf session, she's suddenly out. So I kinda doubt it has something to do with running 2 sessions or any DNS setting.
I will check anyway ...

are you still able to connect via lan? if you are connecting to the wifi router but have no net access its most likely a dns or ip issue, make sure ip and dns is set to automatic/dynamic.... its weird that it was working but suddenly stopped though
 
To rule out a DNS issue, ping a site (eg. mybroadband.co.za) and note the IP address. If the laptop loses connectivity check if you can still ping that IP from the laptop. If you can it's a probably a DNS issue / failure.

What Operating System is running on the laptop? Have you used wireless on the router before?

And I can't find any way to see if DNS or IP is set to automatic. Router is a Mega 105WR.
And, yes, I can access the net via lan from the main computer (Win7). It's just the lappy (XP) not working anymore.
 
Who is your service provider?

We have Telkom ADSL and 2 computers running for a long time no problems.
Then all of the sudden we cannot connect to Internet or download Emails.
We restarted computers modems a few times with no luck.

A call to Telkom identified problem their side and now we have to use manual log in on our ADSL lines. The “A” in ADSL is not for “AUTOMATIC”

*Sigh*....

No you're right it stands for asymmetric not automatic.

Hehe, don't panic ;)

On XP, click "Start" and then "Run". Type "command" into the box it gives. This will give you a command prompt. Now type "ping www.mybroadband.co.za". Assuming the internet is up, it will display the name of the site and will list the IP address next to it. When the connection stops working you can repeat the process but type "ping <that IP address>" instead.

If that's too confusing, type this into your browser address bar when the connection is not working - "http://41.203.21.137/". That is the IP address I get when I ping mybroadband. If your wireless connection is not functioning properly, it will fail. Else it should come back with the message "It works!".

If typing the IP address into your browser works, but typing the site name does not, you have a DNS problem.
 
okay, did the test today, even using 2 different lappies, one with XP and one with Vista. The Vista machine could ping the site name but not the IP address, the XP machine failed on both. Displaying sites in the browser failed on both lappies ...
 
Well if two different machines with different OS's are having trouble staying connected I'd suspect the router. Can you see your PC (on the LAN) from the laptops? If so, that would mean the wireless connection is working but the router is not playing along internet-wise.

If you do a google search for "Mega 105WR firmware wireless" you'll find that wireless issues with those routers are not that uncommon. Something like that can be hard to troubleshoot, I would suggest seeing if you can borrow another router from someone to test and make sure.
