Hey everyone,

Something weird is happening inside my case.

I have a low pitch pulsating/rhythmic sound coming from inside the case which is in sync with the HDD light on the outside of the case. The sound is similar to the sound a HDD makes when reading/writing. The light/sound is visible/audible for about a second every other second.

I suspected a failing drive, HD Sentinal indicated the drive was busy failing and I replaced it today. After a full day of backing up/coping etc the sound and light thing still happens. I swapped sata cables etc and nothing works. Surely this shouldnd be happening with the new drive if the defective drive was the cause?

I ran virus checks with Defender and Malware bytes and both reported my system is clean.

When i unplug the HDD, and boot the PC with only the OS SSD the sound is gone. When i plug it back in, the sound is back.

Does anyone have any ideas?

PS: The started right after i installed more RAM, another GPU and cleaned the CPU cooler's fan.

i am venturing a guess that the hard drive may just be vibrating in the chassis, and its this vibration that you hear when the drive is reading and writing.. remove the drive from its cage and prop it up on a piece of foam or something soft ontop of an anti static bag inside the case and boot the pc and do some reads and writes to the drive.. if the sound is gone, your hard drive is just vibrating your chassis..

never had any issues powering on hard drives on top of anti static bags..

to elaborate on this further, back in the older days with cheaper materials used for anti static bags, they were conductive.. the newer bags in use these days are still conductive but much less so.. probably why i havent had issues, or i have just been lucky a few hundred times..:)

Or do what I do, just plop the hard drive outside the case on top of a book or magazine so it does not touch any metal parts, never had issues as well.

But your pc is drawing more power now, what is your PSU wattage?

Sounds like a drive vibrating in the chassis.
Horrible thing to have - easily fixed with a proper case, or rubber hard drive mount inserts.
