I use a Netgear DG834GT ADSL Router and have recently started having problems with timeouts when browsing. YahooMail and PBase are major problems and are virtually unusable. When I do a tracert, I get a weird timeout immediately after connecting to the router. See below.

What is the cause of the timeout on hop 2? My ISP is Eject.

tracert www.google.com

Tracing route to www.l.google.com [66.102.9.99]

Hi there,

That appears to be a bug on the DG834GT.
The 2nd hop is the external interface (ADSL port, if you like) of the router.

Solution:
Tick the option:
"Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port"
Found under "WAN Settings", on the router config page.
Then you'll get a response when using tracert.

I assume this is happening because the firewall rules on the router prevent the ICMP packet from being returned when "Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port" is disabled, as it could open up a hole in the firewall when enabled. (I could be wrong! :p )

<added note> (Also, I find I get more DOS attacks on my line when ping reply is enabled!!)

All I can say is "Test it and see". :)

Cheers,

GiZ
