Got so cheesed off with all the time taken to complete downloads on winXP every time the missus's machine was switched on that it's now a brand spanking new Kubuntu 9.04. I also set up FTP and moved the Vbox binaries and the XP image from my machine so she can now play her beloved Kyodai too!

Took less than an hour and a half including downloading a few apps, getting the screen card drivers running and some updates.

Well done. Now go get yourself a beer.
Did that :p

She is satisfied with the speed of Kyodai in the VBox, and shutting down the VBox with a "Save the machine state", with her app running gives it a blindingly fast start up when she wants to use it again.

For those who say the average person can't cope with Linux, I say nonsense. All I did was to set up the Kubuntu "start" button to the classic menus and she found her way around in a few seconds. She already prefers Ksudoku to the Win version I bought.

Debunking the myth DIY. My wife and daughter also do not have any problem with Linux and Open Office. Not to talk about benefits of safe and care free internet browsing.

Wise choice you made there BigAl-sa!

That's why I usually do a clean install for each new Ubuntu Distro upgrade, because it so effortless and doesn't take long, including restoring backed up data.
