Bryce Lawrence is the best referee in New Zealand!

Yes, it’s true: The man who blew the Springboks out of the Rugby World Cup won the NZ Referee of the Year award on Thursday.

Look, they didn’t have much to choose from, with the likes of Chris “Panting” Pollock, Keith Brown, Garratt Williamson, Glen Jackson and Jonathon White among the top bunch.

But what about “Geography teacher” Vinny Munro (he looks like a geography teacher, but is actually a policeman in Christchurch!)?

Anyway, Lawrence, who turns 41 later this month, received his well-deserved accolade from the NZ Rugby Union for playing a vital role in the All Blacks’ Rugby World Cup triumph with a diabolical display in the Springbok-Australia quarter-final.

Victor Matfield was kind enough to say that he didn’t think Lawrence “went out to cheat us”, and that he just froze on the day.
