Well this is a first... i got hacked...

So whilst having a party on Saturday evening i wasn't close to my home PC as i wud normally be to witness this, but im kinda also glad i didnt. Later that evening i wanted to browse some forums, and on unlocking my computer i had the "Thank you for using Teamviewer" message. I thought wth and checked my TV app and it was filled to the brim with contacts that ive never seen before. Deleted them all and then proceeded to look for any other thing that the person that was on there might have done. Found on my browser history that they accessed my Paypal account (which luckily had like $2 in it) but checking paypal there wasnt any transactions at least. Also on my recently downloaded files on Chrome was something called WebPassViewer. They most likely ran it and got all my saved browser passwords. Ive since uninstalled TV, changed all my passwords from another computer and hopefully that will be enough for the time being.

I just wanna ask, apart from Malware Bytes, if you guys know of any hardcore apps that can aggresively scan for anything else malicious he / she might have installed? Rootkits, trojans, etc. And how do you think they gained access to my TV to add themselves in the first place... its so weird.. i always double check everything that i do and rarely fall for any kind of phishing mails. The general consencus is to format and reload the OS, but im hoping perhaps i can avoid it, as it wud take forever with all the apps i need to redownload and install.

Check log files > Not really sure its going to help but something to check .

I wouldnt even waste any time, format, reinstall, setup better security.

Whole thing sounds dubious.. as it sounds like a user actually teamviewed into your machine. This sounds targeted and not some bot canvasing for data. Im no security expert but the way you were hacked sounds a bit strange.

No i totally agree. I dont think it was a bot. I think someone got hold of my TV acc info and added themselves as a trusted user then logged into my home pc from there (its always running). Have seen two or three reports of the same happenings on reddit, also the hacker going for paypal right off the bat. Yea, i think ill have to just suck it up and reload the machine. Will format when home later. Theres gonna be nice words coming from downstairs with no media server for the kids. Great
 
I'm contacting TV as I would like to know how this could've happened,

I'll update you on their findings/suggestions.

:wtf: rarely?? So at times, you do fall for them?

Format, replace all apps, you don't know what was comprimized.
 
Check paypal for subscriptions as well- that could only be coming off at the end of the month / week etc.

I agree with the others. Formatting is going to be your best option. I had a DVD with software on it, and my scanners only picked up a trojan about 6 months later.

I have far less trouble with linux than I do with windows 10. It just works- unless of course you are trying to run windows software.
 
You don't have to redownload all of your media, at any rate, unless you are concerned that your player downstairs may be compromised by a malicious movie that the hackers planted.

Watch out for things like Office docs, which may have had macros added to them. i.e. don't just back them up, and restore them later, and trust them unreservedly.

Yea no my main concern is all the apps that are usually installed in Program Files. Most of the installers i dont have anymore. But i guess this is as good a time as any to make backups of them on externals. Usually just screenshot the desktop and back up the documents then wipe and reload.

Never had any major issues myself. I guess I just do a good job of keeping my OS clean and healthy. ;)

You weren't 'hacked'. Some idiot just used your PC for presumably nefarious purposes. Reformat, make sure Windows has a password and don't leave your PC on or unlocked when you aren't using it.

Also, use a password service like LastPass and make sure it has 2-factor authentication. That way, if one of your passwords is compromised it doesn't affect any other sites or services.

As I read this thread I thought 'oh well I am safe for this attack vector' until it occurred to me I have a Last Pass browser plug in, and I leave it authenticated. That means had the hacker gotten through he would easily have access to the password vault as well.
