West to South

So I have decided to do the Dirtbike event West to South.

Only problem I have is I don't have a GPS and its a requirement. I have heard that there is an app called Gaia that can work. I am going to download it tonight and see how it is.

But I am kinda on the market for a offroad GPS. Can anyone point me in the right direction on what to get? Its not my department at all so I am kinda clueless. I also do not have much cash available so something quite cheap, like max R1800? I am not even really sure what they cost. I have just spent a small fortune on my bike and we just also got medical aid so I am really kinda cash strapped.

What is the difference between an 'off road GPS' and any other? Surely a GPS is a GPS?

I have absolutely no idea. I was just assuming that it shows off road trails or something like that and that it was route you to a tar road and not offroad paths. I will have a look tho thanks

Lol well don't quote me on that. You may be right about there possibly being a difference. I would imagine though that as long as the map is up to date that the GPS is taking you along, any one should work.

From what I have seen you get an Automotive GPS and an Outdoor GPS. I found one for R2,089 on Takealot. Hope it has all the latest maps. I also have no idea how to use it so best I get educated quick

Well is your bike prepared for a GPS? Then you are fairly limited if it's say BMW with the Navigator series.

The GPS is the same regardless, but the maps loads are Tracks4Africa which makes the offroad part happen.

For R2,000 you are going to struggle though.

No no no, you don't want an Automotive GPS.

You need a Navigator V or VI (maybe old IV can be found) which can be used with gloves also called a Zumo when not BMW branded.

Thank you so much! I will have a look at that. Had no idea I had to load any tracks on or even where to look.

I'm just a social rider and this will be my first big event that requires a GPS.

The normal maps generally contain just on the road data.

These maps are specifically for off-road trails that have been mapped and contain some more data like elevation and such I believe.

Depending on where it happens at least normal maps could point you to the nearest park of civilisation.

But you definitely want a GPS that can work with gloves. Failing thar there are these things you can stick to gloves to make phone screens and such work so not sure if it would work here.
