Western Digital Caviar Black

Nothing wrong with that drive; had a few in my time and all good. Good warranty - 5 years I think.

Can't comment on the online store though...but a good price.

Thanks, I also thought the price was good. I will send them a stock request to test the water.

Do you have experience with "green" drives, are they not much slower compared to normal drives, ie. blue/black at only 5400 rpm?

I am hesitant to buy green at the moment.

There hardly is any speed difference, like 5% to 10% max, what will you be using the hard drive for?

And the drive has what is known as "IntelliPower" where the hard drive will change speeds according to usage, so it is not always going at 5400rpm it will increase speed when needed.

Also confirm the warranty with NGR Computers on the drive if it's a 2 year warranty rather get a Seagate. It seems like Western Digital has decreased their warranties to 2 year now.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 Series - 500GB Hard Drive [ST500DM002] - R701.00

Otherwise if I was in your position I would go for the Western Digital on special, that's quite a good special R599 for 750GB hard drive.

Mainly setting up an older core2duo for kids. Need to reinstall from fresh as current samsung hdd crashed. So they will mainly play casual games and work in office and watch a movie or 2.

Then the Western Digital Green is more than enough.

Rather stay with the Black drive. They are more reliable as well.

This is quite a common misconception. They spin at a constant speed.

It seems that once you reach 32MB cache there isn't really any noticeable improvement or advantage above it.

Would you still choose the green drive considering this seagate?
