Western digital vs Seagate?

Which hard drive do you prefer?

I've never had a Western Digital hard drive fail on me, whereas I have had a 40GB Seagate die at the most inopportune moment.

WD gets my vote for reliability, and also because they created the Raptor series, the fastest consumer hard drives that money can buy.

BTW, you might also try looking for Hitachi drives - they can be difficult to get hold of but are very reliable, and the SATA2 versions are speedy.

Western Digital > Hitachi > Seagate

Chaos in Kenilworth or they have a store in the Northern subs as well and they beat online stores prices.

Chaos beating online store prices? What a joke!

Take2 - Seagate Barracuda HDD - SATA-300 - 16MB Cache - 320GB - R1,075.00
Chaos - SEAGATE® 320GB HARD DRIVE SATAII - R1,149.00

I have saved hundreds of rands buying my PC components through online stores. They are ALWAYS cheaper than Chaos/Computer Mania etc.

bah now i have no idea whats better now  gotto make up my mind in like just over 2hrs. law of averages says seagate, but then it could just be more people go for it thus recommend it. or maybe old WD's were bad.

So no conclusive answer here then?

Apparently there is a worldwide shortage of IDE drives in general.

Seagate are in really short supply and the WD are always cheaper...

What to go for...

We go through many hard drives.
Seagate is better than Western Digital BUT......
Has anyone here ever taken a faulty Seagate back for a swap out or possible repair.... well you may get a 5 year warranty but boy, you sure wait in the que for attention.
They will need a week to investigate your old HD first before deciding to give you 'another' one, and by 'another' I mean it could be anything.
You buy say, an 40 gig last year, this year it packs up, after a week of irritation with them you will probably get another 40 gig (who knows where they found it).
On the other hand with WD, their support is absolutely top notch, they swap you out instantly, no questions asked, AND they give you today's HD which will possibly be a 120 or 200 gig inplace of your last years 40 gig.

For the support reason alone we use WD as when that thing dies on you, you need a replacement NOW!

We should get a mod to create a poll with the following 3 choice:

Q: Which hard drive do you prefer?

- Seagate
- Western Digital
- Other (please explain in a post)

Would be interesting to see which is the preferred choice.

EDIT: I have only been to Storgate twice, but both times I didnt have to wait...
