So recently myself and a couple of friends have decided to work together because we're all bored of sitting alone at home while working.

We all work for different companies.

It works quite well, except for meetings, because sometimes all three of us end up having meetings at the same time - and I for one, hate sitting for an hour with a headset on, so my meetings are always on speaker.

Anybody else doing this sort of thing? We were just talking about confidentiality and everything that goes with it - and whether this is actually legal. I mean, you won't invite some outsider to sit in in your meetings in the office.

Together from the same place/house? Not a bad option because then you are away from home but still at home.

It is not really a question of legality but, a question of breaching company policies and employment contract regarding confidentiality..

You sit on speaker in meetings, meaning they can hear everything being discussed, including whatever confidential topics may be covered..

Then you need to also stop them from shoulder surfing and reading off of your laptop/computer screens..

Yeah, its one of those things that sounds nice in theory but practically not so much.

Maybe once a week on Fridays, with some adult beverages involved.

I am of the opinion that you might be breaching company policies.

Surely there are confidential matters being discussed? Even if you sit with headphones on, they can still hear what you are answering.

This, anyway will not work for me.

Pretty much in meetings 85% of my day.

It still sounds like a question of legality on top of company policies and all that. Inadvertently exposing confidential information could potentially have legal implications for your employer.

It's not illegal for you to work with strangers.. if it were, co-working spaces wouldn't exist..

The legal implications to the company is as a result of you breaching your company confidentiality policies..

Just go back to the office. You don’t deserve to WFH if you want to be around other people.

If I could choose who sits next to me in the office, I would consider going back.

Nothing beats sitting with likeminded people who are actually your friends and you can talk about things that interest all of you.

Yeah sort of. I work from various places, including go crashing at a friends place also working from home. But I prefer to work by myself, so it is not a daily thing.

I dunno if this is a "thing" hey. It's questionable on a few levels.
Seems the same as those shared space places where you sometimes share a large table with others if you go for the lowest tier seating.

The risk is Ogre's arrangement is that the day is wasted shooting the breeze when there are no deadlines so doesn't work for self managed people who aren't also self motivated.

Hmm I like the idea, we sort of did this during lockdown with the guys in my office, as we are all good friends most of us would be on discord during the day talking nonsense about more nonsense as we always do

The problem with me is I get bored easily and end up putting on the Xbox or doing some other thing that I find more interesting, especially when I look at my current workload and my next deadline is two weeks away and I know I can finish it in a couple of days.

When I see others around me busy, it motivates me to stop ****ing around and finish whatever has been assigned to me, regardless of how far in the future the deadline is.

A great percentage of my job is reactive in nature - i.e, I have work when something broke. So I suppose this kind of thing won't work for everybody who are in meetings 90% of the day.

Yeah, the main concern for me would be the meetings via speaker. If I was working there I would wallop the OP. Put your headset on, Mofo.

Doesn't this happen overseas with remote developers? Like a gang of devs have a rental contract with a coffee shop or restaurant and they make that their "office"?

I've seen a documentary on it at some point. They even travel to different countries as a group.

I actually prefer working alone. I get more done and I'm less stressed. Being alone at home is great!

Infosec would lose their **** if they found out about anyone doing this.

Sound like play dates for grown ups.

Seriously though some people can only function when in groups. Kind of the definition of being extraverted psychologically speaking
