What’s wrong with my lemon trees

Just because it's a spray-on, doesn't mean it's not systemic.

I just looked it up and Rose Guard contains Bifenthrin, Bupirimate and Propiconazole.

The latter two chemicals are systemic. Bupirimate being an pesticide and Propiconazole being a fungicide.

It's not systemic like those pesticides you let the plant obsorb via the roots. Not the same thing.

These are mature trees, and according to the landlord, have carried fruit in previous seasons, but not the past 2 years.

Also, not so sure about 7 years. Healthy commercially grown trees can fruit in the first year, and yield well by year 3.

For interest, this is how my two trees currently look.

I plan to cut quiet a bit off the top of the larger one, to make it more manageable, and the smaller one, just keep pruning the water shoots that come out the bottom and grow straight against the stem, feed them some good fertiliser and then hope for the best. We have some solid rain forecast for Stellenbosch tomorrow and Tuesday, so will try get the fertiliser in early before the rain.

They may also benefit from some trace elements in addition to standard fertilizer. Something like Trelmix.

Human feces can carry cholera, dysentery and salmonella. Chicken manure can also carry salmonella and a deadly respiratory fungus called histoplasmosis.”

I live on a farm, and I own a horse, and have previously farmed goats. I’m well aware of what manure is, and also how to prepare it from mucked out stalls etc. as I said, I will look into more sanitary solutions, instead of pooping under my own trees.

Aaaw... But they still babies.

We have 2 mature lemon trees and one orange trees in our yard. But the lemons are bitter, the oranges are sour and the 3rd tree taste like sour oranges mixed with bitter lemons.

Systemic means that it absorbs into the plant (and into the fruit). Whether you apply it to the roots or the leaves doesn't make a difference, it's still systemic.

Bupirimate has been found to persist for up to 396 days after application:

Propiconazole is commonly applied to the roots . It's half-life has been found to be 60-96 days in typical soils.

Besides Epsom salt, braai ash also works like a charm for lots of lemons on a tree.

We have a very productive lemon tree, that wasn't a great performer when we bought the property. We did epsom salts, put all of our coffee grounds in the soil, fertiliser for fruit trees, and when I clean our fishpond all of that water goes to it. The result is more lemons that we know what to do with.
