What 3G router to get?

Hi people,

I want to share my 8ta 10 GB data via wifi. I have a VKOM 303 USB Modem and after searching around on the forum, I decided to go for the TP-Link MR3220 but after querying with DBG, they say that it does not support my modem. What other routers do you people suggest that are around the similar price as the TP-Link MR3220? I plan on spending about R500 at most.

On a side note. Can someone please explain how it works. If I have a 3G router that can go up to 150mbps but the modem plugged into it only goes up to 7.2mbps, what will the wifi network go up to?

Remember the B683 is a real wireless 3G router, i.e. it includes a modem, you just stick in a SIM card.
The TP-Link is a wireless router with a USB port that supports 3G modems, i.e. you need to stick in a 3G modem.

Yup, that is definitely more convenient but I have a modem already so just need the router part.

I use the Tenda 3G611R+
But this is with a Huawei E367 dongle

But it was like really cheap (R225) and no problems - so far - a year down the line.

Ya, but you have some obscure modem, you might end up having to replace it anyway.

The 150Mbps is the speed of the wifi network. The speed of the USB port the modem plugs into is theoretically 480Mbps.

Yeah the internet will be limited by the speed of the 3G modem/network. The WiFi will still connect at 54/150/300mbps depending on your router/device connected to it.

I see. So basically there definitely is an advantage in plugging in a modem that can go up to 21mbps download speed instead of a modem that can go up t0 7.2mbps download speed?

In theory yes, but I can hardly ever get to 2mbps on 8ta or Cell C as it stands. It depends on coverage and the network infrastructure. Would not be worth it for me to get a faster modem.

Well, I regularly got 6Mbps, with Cell-C, MTN, 8Mbps with 8ta, and 15Mbps with Vodacom - using K4605 modem, changing to my B683, I don't loose much in speed, except when using Vodacom.
