Valid point, problem is we don't have any alternative means of collecting the data. I get a newsletter from Blue Security a couple of times a month which notifies us of crimes in the greater Durban area. Comparing them to the police station results for Kloof & Hillcrest for example show that the police stats are a lot higher than the ones in the newsletter.

If 40 odd people are murdered everyday then why do we only read about 1 or 2 (if that) in the papers?
 
Murders previous year were about 18000.
Thats average of about 1500 per month.
We had Soccer world cup with extra security for 2 months.
If the average murders/month of 1500 were reduced to say 1000/month during world cup.
Then our yearly murder rate would have been reduced from 18000 to 17000 or reduction of 5.5%.

IMHO these reductions were just as an result of the extra security during the soccer world cup.
Government will ofcourse dispute this but they will never release the month to month or quaterly results because that would proof my point.
Now who wants to bet that the murder rate will start creeping up again this year.

Bah, like others mentioned: 6.5% is hardly something to write home about!

That would mean that our Police managed to reduce the number of murders per day from 46 to 43.

Additionally:
56000 Rape cases... That is roughly one in every 10 minutes. Disgusting!

Now my opinion:
With such a high base, it should theoretically be possible to bring those crime number down significantly if the the police was effective in preventing crime.
I would have preferred to see a 100% plus, drop in murders and other serious crime, after all the hoo-haa about the epic police crackdowns and crime prevention "drives".

Seems its all just more "hot air". Same old, same old.

'100% plus' ? So you want to have a negative murder rate? I.e. you murder the murderer which would make you the murderer so the person you murdered has to murder you after they've been murdered?
