There seems to be a massive difference in cost between contract and prepaid (1) and then cellphone networks (2) with one being significantly cheaper than the other.

As an example (and I am trying to keep this simple):
Vodacom Talk 200s Call Rate R1.99
Vodacom All Day per Second R1.70
Prepaid is 30c cheaper per minute?? (I have tried to take two comparable call rates, there are many options if we want to get complicated)

Then we look at Cell C. Their all day call rate is 99c....71c less than Voda per minute. Also charged per second and also an all day rate????

Next we look at their data...500mb bundle is R75 and when you go out of bundle...you keep paying R0.15. On Vodacom, a 500mb bundle is R149 and out of bundle is R1 per mb. Cell C is a far better deal?

So, I have taken the first step and cancelled my contract. Might as well benefit from cheaper calls and we all know I dont need a free phone.

But my question is, why doesnt 90% of the prepaid world port to cell c? Almost half price calls and more than half price data. Is the service that bad? Anyone have real world experience?

My last side note is that on MTN a simswap on contract costs R136 and on prepaid R5.

Both better than the MTN rate on the Topup 100 of R2.85/min

Support companies that actually try to compete, I am porting my MTN number to CellC in March. My wife's phone contract is with CellC already and her coverage is just as good as my MTN, in my experience.

Cell C is opererating exactly like Capitec, they just looking for customers. just enjoy the cheap rates soon or later......
