What are my options?

In summary:
Graduated (law)
Started board exams last year (2 more left to complete)
Unemployed.

I have been searching for work such as articles but gave up on that since its so tough to secure and therefore looking at positions that's not even law related just to have an income.

I am quiet good online in terms of marketing etc and i would like to start a business. i can set up a site and get people clicking and calling in. That's no issue. The problem is i dont have any skills or experience (or certain licenses) to start a business thats offline. ( i want an offline business rather than a digital one).

My only option would be to OUTSOURCE the entire business and get paid from that.

Example: if i start an event business, i'll get people to the site who would then call me or email and i'll outsource the job to an events company. I am not sure how to actually split profits if i get a company that would be willing to do this. End of the day, i'm giving them work and we both benefit.

Appreciate any advice.
 
Why is articles hard to get?

Firms exploit young graduates, graduates learn, win win for both parties.
 
Lots of law firms take in young lads for Articles. They pay a pittance but at least you get experience and free coffee.

My condolences on your career choice. Lawyers are just a step below Politicians.

Yes unfortunely firms do exploit candidates. It is difficult to get articles, that's just how it is.

I dont mind doing my articles but its extremely difficult to be taken in. There are many graduates who are doing boards or completed and cannot get them.
 
Is there an oversupply of legal graduates?

Can you work for legal aid or something similar?

Can you move over to something that uses your legal background i.e. audit firms and do like legal compliance audits?

1. Yes there is
2. Would be great to get into legal aid but they ''picky'' but apparently pay well for those doing articles
3. I would not mind but i believe you need to be qualified first

Well I mean it goes Real Estate agents, Second hand car salesman, Politician roughly all tied first

Having been in events in the past I can tell you this won't work. We worked very face to face with the staff of our contracted companies, and if there was a middle man we would have figured that out very quick and got rid of the extra financial burden. It is also a very relationship driven industry.

Considering you're probably young the events stuff sounds like fun (it is) but you'll need to approach existing companies and work your way up. Try apply at howler? SAB (Sorry, ABInBev these days) also have a pretty large marketing department that gets very involved in the events side of things. They used to sponsor our events with pretty large contributions.

If you want to pursue your articles you'll probably need to be in one of the financial centers of SA, I see your bio says Durban? I'd consider contacting agencies in JHB or PTA, and renting into a digs considering how bad the pay is.

Thanks for the reply, however I just used events company as an example. But what I want to do remains the same just not with an events company. This is the only way I figure I could have a business where I don't need certain experiences or licenses. I'm not a fan of product type businesses but rather service type.

This may be why you are struggling.

If a law graduate can't get basic punctuation correct repeatedly I would also simply ignore and go for the next person.

The once off spelling mistake can be ignored.

I mean it's pretty ironic that the failures are so obvious my browser fixed it while I marked it in bold.

no, people spent bloody fortunes studying law, or IT or whatever it is, they just want a chance to earn some cash and life peacefully, contributing to the economy.

do agree in a few years the tool called AI will be like 10000 lawyers each working for nothing, and make their jobs all redundant,
but I think it will make anything knowledge based, like IT or Chemistry or Law or even something as mundane as car repair obsolete

but we aren't there yet,

Look, middlemen add cost and provide very little benefit compared to a direct business relationship between a seller and a buyer, hence why there aren't many large examples of these businesses. If you want to have your own business one day, you need to understand your industry and once you're confident you can compete in it by all means start your own business and compete, but without that very industry specific knowledge you're unlikely to attract and retain customers.

And no, you won't get the kind of knowledge I'm referring to from a book or a degree, it comes only through experience. My degree was locked up in a cupboard the day I got it (BCom) and hasn't seen the light of day since then.

No, no, no, no.... but this will be a good start and we are there already. At least start grouping and preparing for now....
