What are torrent trackers, how do they work?

What are private trackers, apparently you can even buy subscription access to high speed private trackers?

I thought torrents was an open source system, all peer-to-peer etc but why would one torrent site not have torrents that are on another and vice versa but on the other hand both would have many of the same torrents, its apparently linked to the trackers?

Basically with public trackers a lot of people download without seeding.

Now with private trackers you have to seed a certain amount to make sure your upload/download ratio stays good.

And why would the big torrent sites not have the same basic current torrents, people mention uploading the torrent to a site but it's not the file that's uploaded it's just a hotlink to the p2p address?

Private trackers have their own community feeding content into the system. For example those Game Of Thrones S5 leaks were leaked on IPTorrents first, then after people downloaded it from IPT it was re-uploaded to other public trackers.

Private trackers have rules to prevent people from downloading everything and leaving (leeching) by forcing people who download to upload. This maintains a good seed/leech ratio and exclusive content to create a community of people who know they have to act a certain way or they will be removed from the community.

Private trackers are just trackers that aren't open to the public. And due to this it acts as a filter for **** content and leeches.

The torrent client just gets certain info from the tracker that helps it connect to other torrent clients that are also seeding or leeching pieces of the same torrent. The downloaded pieces of the file come directly from other torrent clients that are in the swarm (....read cloud) not via the tracker itself.

Usually with public torrents they can run even without a tracker using a system called DHT. With private torrents DHT is usually disabled so the tracker can keep an accurate(ish) handle on the ratio uploaded by each client although there are ways and means of falsifying ratios.
