So, lightning assaulted my trusty, beloved Denon AVR2310, consigning it to a well deserved rest and replacement with something that has 21st century specs ...

Now, the like for like replacement as approved by my insurance is the AVR X2200 at R16k
What else should I be looking at in that price range, or should I be looking at the next denon up? Is it worth the cost bump?

What about the Onkyo TX-NR646? I think a teeny bit more, but I've always liked Onkyo

What does it have over the Denon? (I'm a denon fan...)

Just really an emotional choice, I guess (I like Onkyo).

I think they're extremely similar, but something I just read up was the room correction on the Denon is much better.

So now it's between the x2200 and x3200
Is there 6 grands worth of value difference between them?

I'd personally go for the Marantz SR5010. Have a Marantz receiver at the moment and they're great.

Agreed 100%

@OP, What speakers do you have ?

Acoustic research AR-1000

I'm not really looking for preferences, I'm looking for solid performance/feature reasons to change brands, as I am a denon fan ;)

Also maybe look at getting a power amp if you have decent speakers and rather buy a cheaper or lower model denon.

Just make future upgrades cheaper.

I bought a Rotel power amp (100w x 3) driving the speakers and a cheaper lower rated denon amp doing the decoding and driving the back speakers. Cool thing about this is when a new 3D or Dolby or HDMI standard comes out I just have to upgrade the amp with another cheap amp.

Normally the power output that makes an amp expensive and you have taken that out with the power amp.

I haven't actually read up on the differences, but I'm willing to guess they're not huge and 'future proofing' which is doubtful you'll do

I remember buying a 7.1 Marantz amp over my 5.1 Onkyo 10+ years and justified the purchase by the extra amplification and speakers. Till now, I've not bothered with 7.1.

Denon features scale up as the power scales up...
Eg, the major difference between the X2200 and X3200 is 10W per channel RMS, and a second independant HDMI out for dual-zone operation from multiple sources, as well as a stronger video processor.

The power of the X2200 is a pretty good match for my speakers at around 125W RMS per channel, and that's more than I'll ever use. It nearly shook a ceiling board loose from its nails before;) X2200 supports most stuff that's out there now - including DTS:X with an upcoming firmware update. 4k, hdcp2.2 included - but can only upscale to 4k @ 30hz. 4k@60hz needs the X3200.
But I don't see R6k of value in that.

Have had bad experiences with the Denon of late the hdmi motherboards suck- I have already had it replaced once and now had to move to the next one over as the first hdmi has now died again. So I would opt to go to another brand. Also set me back.

Scored a discount on the X3200, bringing it into my price range, so decision is made :D

haha indeed
now I think i need to put in a day's leave to learn how all this new stuff works!

I thought I'd read up on it - then I got to trying to understand 4:4:4 resolution and got a nosebleed :/

Faaar to complex. But congrats!
