What bike to get

So I started taking lessons to ride a motorbike. I've been learning on a 600cbr honda and its just gotten better and better with each lesson.

The question I have tho is, when I look to purchase my first bike (in september or therabouts..), should I be looking to get a 600 or something similar or should I look to get something smaller since this is my first bike? Not planning to spend any more than about R45 000 on the purchase of the bike.

If you're comfortable on the baby blade I see no reason to downgrade
 
^^ What they said. Stick with the 600. It's a good starting point.
 
Lol...I learnt to ride on a 125...and when I got onto my 600 I was like "woah".

Agreed about sticking with the 600 though. Nothing wrong with getting your own CBR600, especially if thats what you learnt on...at a reputable school.

The only thing is, always be careful. I had been riding for a few weeks and I was taking a corner...for some idiotic reason I down shifted, revs shot up, back wheel kicked out, I shat my pants but luckily I didn't bail. I have a Honda Hornet (slightly detuned CBR600 engine), but more powerful bikes wouldn't have been as forgiving. It could have been ugly....

So ja, grab the CBR600 but be cautious...it has loads of power!

Jy gan val, een of ander tyd. Dit gebeur net, of dit nou jou skuld is of nie - it happens boet. Ekt twee keer geval since ek my bike gekoop het in Feb 2011. Touch wood ekt nogi since geval nie.

but ja, ek sou n goedkoop tweede handse 250 CBX aanraai, ry die ding vir n paar maande en dan raak ontslae van dit viri selfde prys. Shop ini R10-15k price range.

Voorspoed, hou die rubber kant onder en die blink kant bo! :)
 
If you want a 600 get a slightly more sedate one, like a sv650. loved by all who have had one. i saw the sv1000 today,man- heard that thing a mile away. sounded like thunder <3
 
Are you looking at sportsbikes?

The Suzuki SV is a fantastic bike. Ride one 1st though. Not everyone likes a torquey twin over a high revving four. (I have a Ducati 748, so I'm definitely A twin fan).

If you want to buy new, your options are pretty limited. Hyosung 650 or Kawasaki 250 (great bike).

Second hand you have your pick of 600s.
 
There is a nice list of 600s that will suit beginners, with a little riding experience

Honda CB600F Hornet
Yamaha FZ6R
Kawasaki ER6n
Suzuki SV650
Honda NC700X (brand new but great value for money)

I have the Hornet and up to about 7000 revs, shes a puppy. Twist the throttle over that and she seriously wakes...screams as you hold on. ;)

maby also add a cbf600.theyre going for around R50-55k new atm,special.amazing value. im just afraid of someone starting on a cbr600.a sports bike like that usually isnt very forgiving.yes,you can try control the right wrist, but still.usually people who start out smaller and work their way upto more powerful bikes have more control,and confidence.the last thing you want is to be uncertain and scared of your bike.itll just ruin the experience.yes there is more to it than going fast in a straight line.yes, this is my honest opinion.
 
Thanks for all the advice so far peeps...must admit that I havent had a look at the SV series of bikes..

My preferred options thus far have been the cbr600 and the yamahaFZ6R. Planning to get a 2nd hand to start off with and in a couple of years or so I will look at buying new perhaps. As for the falling, I have learnt to accept it internet swag, already had a fall but fortunately was a minor one and got straight back on.

Respect the the throttle is something of a mantra for me...
 
Suzuki GSR 600 is nice too. Had one & enjoyed it alot. Abused it badly but never had any problems.
 
There is just something special about Suzuki's... they turn any altar boy into a hooligan with two horns :D !!!! And damn their engines can take punishment and abuse.

I keep telling myself, next bike will be something else other than a Suzuki, then once I took the other brands for a test drive, I end up back in the Suzuki camp. The GSR is a nice bike, and I just wish they would make one in a 1000cc package ... that would force me into making debt !!!

Have to agree. I used mine hard but did not push it while the engine was cold.

My neighbor on the other hand is a whole other character. He only takes his old suzuki superbike for a ride once a year but starts it every weekend. I think he starts it with full throttle every time as it hits the rev limiter almost immediately. He then proceeds to rev the crap out of it for about 15 minutes.

My head tells me that the engine should fail due to the extreme stress of high rpm's while the cold oil hasnt had a chance to circulate but it doesnt seem to work that way. Have been listening to the racket every fcking saturday for about 4 years now.
 
And don't forget GEAR GEAR GEAR. Build it into your budget. Go to Think bike for some good advice.

It's a schlep to gear up sometimes but I know if I have a minor spill, I won't be worried about road rash.
 
Hi there, can anyone advise URGENTLY please? My son has a Suzuki 400 Bandit and wants to know if he can use 260GTX 104RON UNLEADED in this bike, and what will the consequences/effects be??
