Social media is a dangerous place for employees to share their views, especially if they are perceived to be racist, sexist, or derogatory.

In 2013, former Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela was fired for tweeting: “I trust that JubJub’s supporters gave him a jar of Vaseline to take to prison.”

That's a bit severe, he was probably just thinking of the problems he might encounter with dry skin.

Surely they are entitled to their own opinion on their own time without fear of attack by their employer?

Your social media actions should only be under scrutiny if your job position is in client relations and communication. But not if you're some programmer or accountant stuck in an office somewhere... In that case they should leave your personal life alone. Infact, you should be able to sue them for interfering in your private life.

OK, so let me understand this- These are people getting fired because their companies see stuff on FB?
This makes me wonder now.. what is the connection between the FB of the individual and the company?

Because if they are doing this now, since when do companies own you down to your private life?
This question comes up often om MyBB, but is never fully explored or answered properly and today is the day I think we should look at this.
