so I ended with with a mtn 7 inch steppa tab. its quad core with a 1gb ram on android kitkat..
though mtn would not repair my faulty out of warranty one, but they just swapped it for a new one.

in the meantime i got the kid anotehr tab.

so this mtn one is surplus.

soo what can i do with it?
i read on the kindle, so maybe netflix, plex etc to watch movies etc.
what about kodi- how will it run on the above spec ?

also do i have to root it?

any ideas?

hmmm use the front facing cam for that lol

Being an early adopter of the tablet craze, I happen to have a crappy Chinese one. It has 500-odd MB RAM, 2GB storage and a dual core 1GHz CPU. My regular tablet is worlds ahead of that junk, and has been handy during load shedding evenings.
I found Youtube videos on how to turn your Smartphone into a 3D Hologram (also works on 7" screens), and those mini-projects breathed new life into my cheap tablet. It will be fun for both you and the kid.

Hook it up to your WiFi, and then stick it either on your fridge, or on a surface close to your fridge that doesn't move much and is near a power outlet. Now use it for tallying up what groceries you need or use during the month, use it to look up recipes, have the screensaver display photos from a Google Drive account or make it show you the news headlines when the screen is locked.

Hell, install a timer app and let it keep track of how long things have been cooking for. Make it work like an IOT device so that you know in advance if you want an internet-connected fridge when you get to replacing your current one in the future.
