I was wondering, what maintenance tasks do you do in an effort to look properly after your car? Just to make sure your car is well maintained and looked after, over and above the scheduled maintenance?

Suspension components like shocks, rubber bushings, ball joints and engine mounting. Coolant hoses and vacuum pipes, they tend to crack under the constant heating and cooling. Check for any leaks in the engine bay and underneath.

Lastly take time to wash your own car on a nice sunny weekend, pay special attention to the concealed areas the carwash guys never bother to wash, inside the filler cap, underneath the doors and behind them and underneath the bootlid.

I second washing your own car. Makes a huge difference. You get to see things when you pay attention to that. The drivers manual will also be a nice guide on whats needs to be maintained etc.

No extra maintence. Wash it weekly (gardener or car wash - I take too long if I do it myself).

If I notice something that needs attention, I always do it straight away.

Check Tyre pressure and fluids frequently. Look for loose nuts, damage to rubber boots and so on. Swap tyres around monthly (every 4th month each Tyre has spent a month on each corner of the car).

Do you swap your tyres yourself?seems like a pain in the assembly to do that so often. I assume you don't have assymetrical tyres then?

Yea, takes about 30 minutes. Tyres last much much longer. Have the space and equipment so why not :)

Wash it myself when possible.

Check tyres frequently. Like once a month at the very least and fill them myself.

Rotate tyres every 8000km or so.

Check oil and fluids myself as well.

Have in the past done brakes myself and if there is something obvious that pops up like bulbs needing replacement I'll do it myself as well.

Servicing I know a reasonable mechanic and trust him more than myself to do the work although I'll help out there if I have time.

No just rotate, balance every service (adds R200 or so to the cost so why not).

Aah okay.

I just do the whole lot every 8000km.

Rotate, balance and alignment.

Think it's about R180 but that's a lot cheaper than replacing worn tires more often than they need to be.
