What car to get?

To me regular vehicle finance is generally not a problem at all.

It's when they need residuals to make it "affordable" that you know they can't afford it.That being said I've never paid a single vehicle finance agreement in the full term.

Pretty much 2-3 years max, negating the interest somewhat.
Residuals are for short term leases. So if you know you going to trade in your vehicle after 2-3 years, residual is the way to go.

And most of the people in this argument would immediately say that the need to change cars every 2-3 years is pissing away money.

Yip when a private person buys on credit, you always going to lose money.

Companies on the other hand, its a different story.

Yeah for sure. Whole different story than.

Companies don't generally have affordability concerns either.

Which is exactly what I done when I needed to buy my first BMW out of necessity on credit, sounds like you understand credit and how and when you need it,unfortunately the majority of people taking out credit today don't.

I also put down the biggest deposit I could then settled the car after 1,5 years.People buying personal cars with residuals is just bad news.

Is it? It's actually highly dependent on his lifestyle. If he's single and has no serious responsibilities, and can afford that out of his salary and can still pay his rent and groceries, then it's not massive. If he's got a stay at home wife and three kids at private schools that he's funding then it probably is. But we don't actually know that.

True enough I don't know his personal details and like I said above if I'm wrong he is welcome to correct me,however have you actually checked how people abuse credit availability these days? It's shocking to say the least.

I'm thinking of spending 20% of my income on beer this month...

Without having read through all the pages, has there been any advice pertaining to best fuel economy / value for money vehicles? For example, I have been looking at TDI / TDCI / TDSFI :) vehicles in the R200K to R270K range. And what seems to come up is the Fiesta TDI, Ecosport TDI, Polo TDI and Golf TDI. Im not excited about a polo, just due to the general lack of excitement, and then subsequent theft and insurance costs. (hence the value for money comment above) The fiesta is really nice, but road noise is a concern. The ecosport is nicer, but the capital cost is higher. The golf is probably the better vehicle, but again capital cost is an issue. So not sure if there are any other contenders out there. Preferably not French made. Was considering, at the golf and ecosport prices, at a second hand ST. Albeit petrol, the fuel use comparisons are not too far off.

Well, I do a fair amount of km's, so the diesel seemed the right choice. However, I did the calcs over the warranty period between diesel and petrol variants, Ecosport model, Fiesta Ecoboost 1.0t. and it seems there is little difference to favour the diesel. So that answers that question.
