What causes deep cycle batteries to do this?

My Intellipower 4 was no longer lasting for a loadshedding session. Bought 2 new deep cycles today and when I opened the trolley, this is what I saw. Batteries are just over 3yrs old. What causes this? Just end of life?

The reality is that nothing lasts forever. Deep cycle batteries can handle slightly more discharge percentage than automotive starter batteries, but still have a finite lifetime. We have exactly the same problem with gate motors (etc), typically lasting 18 months to 3 years.

The surface chemistry of battery cells is incredibly complex, and only incremental improvements have ocurred in the last century. The move to lithium ion is indicative of the limitations of lead chemistry.
 
Chronic undercharging will cause the white residue on the negative terminal.
Inverter to blame?

I'm waiting for Mecer 720w units to become available at a decent price again and then thinking of buying 2 and splitting my 2 new deep cycles

I'm not so sure about this. Ive seen lead sulfate on thousands of batteries and in my experience it has little to do with undercharging. Most of those batteries where being charged fine and went on to have typical lifespans.
The real issue is that it gathers between the post and the terminal causing high resistance and a poor connection. You should be checking lead acid batteries at least once a year to clean it off.

A little grease or terminal spray will prevent this from happening tho.
