What causes noise on line?

Have you tried to only connect the modem/router and remove everything else? this includes FAXES, Phones, POTS filters and lightning / surge protectors?

I literally have the exact same problem.

Always had a 4Mbps line, with SNR of around 9-12dB, all of a sudden a few months back something changed, and I can no longer sync on 4Mbps properly, even on 3Mbps the SNR fluctuates from 15dB down to 3 or 4, which causes intermittent connection issues.

I've been fighting with Telkom for months to take a look at the line/wiring/exchange side of things, but they simply refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem. So good luck to you on that one. They basically run a silly line test, read the values and tell me that my line is okay. Seems legit!

I live in Panorama, and am connected to the main Telkom Exchange in Parow, Voortrekker Road. 3.5km cable distance.

Sick of these issues!

Have you made sure that your phone filters are working?

Yes, I have a brand new Duxbury microfilter, and only one wired phone. I've also tried unplugging the phone and running the router directly into the Telkom jack, no difference.

To make things even better, I've replaced my entire telephone line from the pole outside, high quality outdoor drop wire buried in conduit with only one jack in the house.

Oh well - it seems like you have done your best to fix this. The only other thing it could be is between your DSLAM and the exchange :(

Good luck with Telkom

I'm in Durbanville and have the exact same problem. Line attenuation is excellent, but noise has suddenly tanked since last week. Never had this before.

My noise was sorted out by Telkom last week after logging fault . Thank you Telkom .

Technician came yesterday and laid a new cable. I wasn't home so not sure what they did or tested. Will see how it goes now.

Current stats (10mb line with 4mb account) :

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7008 kbps 639 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.0 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 14.1 db 13.0 db

Do any of you have your router installed close to a Plasma TV?

I was quite surprised to find they wreak havoc on ADSL lines.

Brand new phone jack installed by Telkom. I'm guessing the problem lies somewhere between the telephone pole, street-corner cylindrical junction boxes, and the actual exchange. Who knows how many joints are in between? Or bad pieces of copper.

I live in Sea Point, in probably one of the biggest and oldest blocks.

Who on earth knows where the lines come in, and I shudder to think how many connections my line must go through.

Currently sitting on 12.7db SNR and I can sync 8mb with no issues. I have noticed, however, that my line is a bit crackling at times. I always thought it was coz of our cordless phone.

Gonna swap out the filter and see what happens... hmmm...

The infrastructure can't be that old if your SNR is that high on 8meg, or you live quite close to an exchange.

Contrary to your line, my phone line sounds good, but I struggle to sync at 4meg with an SNR of 5-6dB. Also quite an old area...

I'm very close to the exchange so attenuation counts in my favour heavily :)

High speed ADSL can also be seen as noise.
When I moved here I had a 1 mbit connection, the SNR was 32 dB.
Then Telkom upgraded us to 2 mbit and my SNR dropped to 22 dB.
Last week we were upgraded to 4 mbit and now my SNR is 14.5 dB.
