What could be the problem?

Not even close, R 200 for the gasket, and I do have some sealer in my garage some where :D

As for the skim, if needed - Engineering shop = R 300 :D

Which engineering shop will skim an Opel head for R300. Please PM me details for future reference

You're forgetting things like tappet cover gasket, new oil, engine flush, head bolts etc. Sometimes they warp and it's always advisable to replace them after removing the head.

Indeed, hence why I am now asking questions... head bolt warp is very common, especially on Corsas I am told.

That fact of the matter is the 5 weeks they've taken is rubbish.

I redid the head on my ford escort many years ago in the parking area of where I worked.

Skimmed head, bought new bolts/head gasket/tappet gasket etc and used light sand paper to remove the old gasket from the block. Took me an afternoon including dropping off and collecting the head which they pressure tested for cracks as well. Fair enough, the machine shop was 5 k's away in Wynberg but still, they shouldn't take that long.

It should take 3 days maximum for them to do that work and if it's as simple as just the head gasket they shouldn't charge you for anything else.

HH, did you tell them to quote first before they did any extra work?

I did ask them for a quotation, but I wouldn't know if they were making it up since I'm no mechanic. I went there yesterday and I was fuming (I wish you could have seen me. And I can't talk properly when I'm angry) & they said the car could start, but it's making some nasty noise again. They showed me the parts they bought, and the noise was due to wrong size of those things.

They said I will only pay for the parts, not labor. Next time I go there, I'm going with a baseball bat. I'm going to moer those punks. :p

I wish I still stayed in Midrand. I would've pop around and had a word with the scumbags for you.

There are too many mechanics ripping off people who don't know any better.

*Sigh*

I went to collect my car last week, BUT it had this nasty, irritating sound in the engine. I wanted to trade it in, but because of that sound, I got a very bad deal. So I decided to take it back to those guys since I had a six months guarantee.

But now the guys are just sitting on their arses since I have paid already.
I was thinking of demending a refund, but I'm sure they'll steal some parts in the car since it couldn't start, and that will definitely cost me a lot more.

Should I contact authorities for this? Which ones :p

*Rant over*

You can contact RMI - that's if they are RMI approved.

If they are not affiliated with any organisation, then you're going to have a problem trying to claim from them.

Wish you well with trying to sort this out.

Thank you. It says on their business card that they are affiliated with RMI.
I got this from their website about complaints

Complaints
Should you feel dissatisfied with the product or service rendered to you by an accredited RMI member establishment, we recommend the following procedure. Please ensure that you read the complete instructions hereunder before registering your complaint.

1. Talk to Senior Management
Insist on speaking to a member of management before you take any other course of action. "Counter level" problems are more often than not satifactorily resolved when a member of senior management becomes involved.

2. The Dispute Remains Despite the Involvement of Senior Management
Should this be the case, use the button below to fill in electronic registration form. It is preferable that you register online. Should you prefer to send us a brief fax, use the button below. Please do not forward supporting documentation unless you are requested to do so by an RMI official. Complaints in respect of disputes older than 6 months are not accepted by the RMI, for obvious reasons. Your complaint will be routed to the appropriate RMI regional office closest to you.

3. Fee Structure
In order for the RMI to assist you in determining the outcome of your complaint, you will be required to pay R228.00 which is a non-refundable administration fee. During the process should technical inspections be required for assessment purposes, an additional payment of R399.00 will be required. Should this be necessary you will be consulted first. Figures quoted are inclusive of VAT.

In the interim it would be appreciated if you would kindly deposit R228.00 as follows:

Bank: Standard Bank
Branch: Randburg
Branch Code: 018005
Account No.: 021670013

The deposit slip should be faxed immediately to the relevant Regional office as indicated hereunder Fax
