What could be wrong

Nope it had a 80% charge still to who should I take it to the Istore or to vodacom where I bought it ?

Press home and power at the same time for several seconds?

Tried the hard reset nothing plugged into Itunes nothing even put it into the charging dock look like no signs of life on it. Is it perhaps bricked or something?

Sounds like a dud. But leave it charging overnight and see. Not jailbroken I assume?

Thanks for the article I got it to work last night after 2 hours the hard reset worked.I gave vodacom a call and they say they don't do swap replacements they only send it away to JHB to be assessed and and you will have to wait 14 working days should it need repairs it will then be done. How does it work does these phone not fall under the warranty of Core? or are they the responsibility of the network?

They tell you to wait for 14 days. Eventually they just replace the phone. Happened twice to me.

This may sound stupid, but does the phone have a protective cover on it?!?

If so, remove it & try switching it on again.

I have had a problem in the past where on of the sensors was covered by the cover & it did strange things, like no switching on.

Also, try simultaneously holding down the power & the home button for a minute & then release.

What sensor is that? and what does it sense? I only have a screenprotector on the front and moshi iglaze 4 snap case everything is exposed buttons on the side charge dock n top totally open.I can't see that a cover would cause this I wonder if the others had any cases who also experienced this problem. Is it hardware or iOS related?

I have never read about this the iPhone 4

the iphone 4s has a sensor just under the speaker (that you hold to your ear). if it's touched, the screen goes off...

hope this helps! :)

Yip, as #ab.adam stated, it is a proximity sensor. I have had firsthand experience how a screen protector & cover can create havoc with an IPhone.
