Hey guys...

I've got a 4MB line, and I'm living in a flat with a friend of mine. We never used our telephomne, but recently he got a new GF that's 1000km away and they're on the phone 3hrs a day.

Every time our phone rings and he picks up, my Internet drops...
It stays off for exactly 52seconds and comes back on as if nothing happened.
(Although sometimes my ping just jumps to 70-90 odd during a call for some weird reason.

I play COD4 competitively, and need to sort this out.

I do have a filter (tried both that came with our Billion router) installed on the phone side of the line.

How can I fix this? (And if it's faulty filters, where do I buy new ones?)

When I was on 384 in 2004/5 we had this problem for a few weeks, as I remember the only solution was for a technician to come out.

I doubt it's only a filter issue ;)

I had my DSL drop a lot (also if the phone rings) until it went completly dead. Turned out their was a problem at the Telkom exchange all along. Telkom even compensated me by not charging for the "down time" as a result.

Is the filter installed on ur friend's phone and every other phone in the house?

Yes, we only have the one phone :)

I actually tried both filters in serial too, but nothing works..

When we answer the phone, it takes about 5 seconds, then there's this weird "white noise" coming over the phone, accompanied by the drop in the Internet line.

Some weird stats from my router :

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin
: 19.0 ; 7.0 db

Line Attenuation
: 30.5 ; 17.5 db

Data Rate
: 4096 ; 480 kbps

Isn't my upstream supposed to be 512kbps?

most people will tell you to replace your filters, but having had this same thing happen to me for a long time, I think it could be more.

Calling Telkom though is not going to help as they will tell you to replace your filters.

My problem eventually went away by itself.

My suggestion is for you to go to University and study to be an electronics wizard and telecommunications guru, and then you can diagnose the problem yourself.

Bonus if the problem has also gone away by itself by then.

Good Luck! ;)

You can request a technician, even if Telkom says you should replace the filters, only thing is, if they don't find fault, you'll have to pay for the technicians call out, last year it was R150 if I recall ;)
