What dedicated Photography forums are in Sa?

The only one I know of is ODP but it's a little stagnant, there is another local forum called modelbase(I think) if I remember correctly that's local and quite big?
 
Start your own I'll join. I love photography although I don't have the equipment. Still find it fascinating.

Would prefer a forum, I try to keep off Facecrack as much as possible.

There was a local forum I stumbled over a yr or 2 ago that was quite big, it was a forum pairing up models with photographers, I was surprised how big it was. It wasn't really a straight photography forum per say but very active.

Odp can't be the only bona fide forum in Sa, photography is very popular in Sa?

Almost forgot there is also that forum linked to Pix magazine but it's not really a independent forum, it's more a companion to the magazine and last I looked lots of dcik measuring going on :D

Lol, why thank you kindly sir, always dreamed of being given the chance to teach grown-up children how to play nicely in my spare time, not.

Only way I'll be a mod of a forum is if I own it!

Building a successful forum takes a lot of passion and hard work, probably why Odp has gone down the tubes, no one behind the scenes is really invested in making it thrive, it's by and large just a funny lumpy growth on the back of the Odp shop, they tolerate it but that's about it.

True, I want to shut down muscle talk, fitness doesn't seem to be a sa priority.

Then all my time pours into PW, I like it and I've only had compliments so definitely in that for the long haul.

Photography although I'm not a photographer myself has always been a part hobby for me I do like it. So I don't mind investing time there if you guys want a forum. (making it is up to the community, but from my part I can give reassurance it wont dissappear overnight so your time invested in posting won't be taken lightly and thrown back in your face.)

Anyway just putting it out there, I'm good with the design and all that so it can be made very beautiful and custom.

True that, community is the glue of humanity and forums are one of the types of community in the digital age.

Another local forum guitarforums.co.za is busy dieing a slow death due to the owner being hellbent on monetizing it, really sad. Used to be a good local resource, busy and then downhill after the owner shifted his focus to making money, "taking his rightful cut", advertising become aggressive etc. You have to focus on the people first, hosting a forum has to be due to passion first any money you make is just a side benefit not the core motivation. If you play your cards right you can have both but don't put the cart in front of the pony...

How much server costs do forums incurr, if all content apart from text is user hosted off-site?

I can't speak for mybb or the others but on my case let's take two examples, I have PW which does 6k page views a month so the hosting package is possible with a small VPS, I host all the content on the VPS encrypted of course, but the reason is I want it to be as easy as possible for users to share stuff imeger and the likes is a hassle for the end users I want them to click upload and be done with it. So longterm the only real costs will be storage, not so much bandwidth yea bandwidth will be a number one concern, but long term storage itself becomes the money hogger imagine threads from 2004 you still need those images available to serve.

The if we take another example a Chinese comedy forum I run average about 22k page view a month that site I needed a considerable larger VPS as they tend to upload about 300mb per day.

So to answer your question the biggest costs with a forum will be storage and then in my case I like to customize everything to what the community would like it to be so hiring top notch developers eats into the the costs quite a bit.

Most importantly time, so how much is your time worth? Hence my forums are passion I love it I love user generated content I love hosting and working with data hence why I am not bothered with money, without wanting to sound like a Douche, I have enough, the forums I built are there because I truly believe that they can assist with education and fill gaps.

What figures would be a real world monthly cost?
 
None that I know of. They are all part of another site and mostly there for supporting the main site. Modelbase isn't worth mentioning as the guy doesn't know how to run it and it's also not a photography site.

You can start off with a vm5 https://www.domains.co.za/cloud-server-hosting a forum can never be offline so the best hosting money can buy and then the best support for when it hits the fan (trust me it always hits the fan)

And then upgrade as storage grows.
