Good day to all the good South African people.

So last week Friday afternoon, I was involved in an accident with a car. Lady Luck was on my side, as I walked away with only some bruises on my legs and a bump on the short rib.

The motorcycle headlight unit and indicators on both sides were ripped off by the car.

Throttle handle torn, mirror broken, front brake lever bent, handlebar bent on throttle side. Damaged by the bike falling over.

I was 3/4 over the intersection, and a prick decided that he was going to skip the (non-functioning) traffic light. While there were other vehicles stopped at the intersection, waiting on me to pass (I had right of way).

In the video footage, the driver of the car did not attempt to slow down or stop at the intersection.

I need to pick up the accident report from the metro, which will cost R150

After I obtain the accident report, what are the correct steps to get him to pay for the repairs on my bike? It did not seem that he had insurance; if he did, he did not share the information.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

If you have insurance, go to your insurance company. They’ll handle it.

If you don’t have insurance, pick up a copy of the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. It'll help you accept that life is suffering.

You claim through your insurance and let your insurance fight to get back their money, that's why you pay the premium to them every month..

Get your insurance to repair the damages to your bike - sell it - and get yourself a car with a 5-star NCAP safety rating - having been involved in 2 bike accidents in the 1980's - both not my fault - the very real possibility of being killed by a 'cager' is not worth it.

One was when cresting a blind rise on a dirt road in the Transkei on my Honda XR500R and being confronted by a herd of goats crossing the road - I went off-road onto the grass verge to avoid them & as I was getting back onto the road again I hit a drainage culvert that was hidden by long grass - quick somersault over the handlebars & one very slightly damaged bike & a broken left wrist later... at least I got a few weeks sick leave as the wrist I had broken was my writing hand...

The other was when driving down a multi-lane road in the Durban city centre on my Yamaha XT600Z Tenere - on my way to work on a Saturday morning - when a jay-walking gogo & her grand-child decided to cross the road (totally ignoring the pedestrian crossing 50m down the road) & instead of waiting on the white line on the left of my lane for me to pass - just kept crossing right into my path - one slightly damaged bike again - bent levers, foot-pegs & crash-bars - and myself a bit battered & bruised - but NO broken bones this time around - the jaywalker gogo was uninjured but the left handlebar had struck her grandchild and broke her arm...

I called it a day for bike riding a few months later & bought my first car, a 1982 silver VW Golf Mk.1 GTS - which was unfortunately written off 18 months later, when a moron in a Mazda 323 decided to drive across an island separating two opposing lanes, right into my path - instead of driving another 300m up the road and using the bridge to cross over & go back in the opposite direction - thankfully it was in a 60 km/h zone and the front crumple zone & 3-point inertia-reel seatbelt meant I could walk away from this accident with only a bruised shoulder & arm from the seatbelt.

Insurance and since when do you pay for an accident report?

People don't care anymore, get yourself a old bakkie. I love bikes I use to ride one for may years. One day on my way to work, truck with no trailer speeded past me pushed me off the road. They don't care for your life so maybe do something to take care of your own.

Still love bikes, will never ride one again.

If you wait too long to collect from the police station, it gets shipped off elsewhere and you then need to pay for it..

Happened last year with my wife and her accident.. think a week a later she went to collect from the police station it was reported at and they had already shipped it off..

Collect what?

Last time I had an accident all the insurance company wanted was the report number. They're more than capable of collecting the actual report (and any other supporting evidence). It's their job.

I think the R150 is to pull the video footage.
Is that his job?

We were just doing what the insurance company asked us to do, feel free to question them yourself on it..

Go to your insurance, pay your excess and let them buy you a new bike. If they choose to go after the other party then they can do that on their own without your involvement.
