Looking for a modem router and it seems there are so many features, one thing i would like to have would be access to my home office machine while on the road is there a specific feature provided by the modem router that allows this, if anyone could explain the different features and what they are there for this would really help
thanks

Obviously when you are on the road, you would be using some flavour of mobile internet. If you leave the home office machine running and connected to the web there are various ways of getting access to it and interact with it. I personally use free software provided by www.realvnc.com

There are many commercially available software on the market for doing what I assume you want to do including commercial software at www.realvnc.com

Depending on what your needs are the options are endless... There are people on this forum that can advise you on the alternatives...

The router at the end of the day will not be the thing that makes the difference. Software will make the difference. A router can only provide you with mobility within the office through wireless capabilities. Outside the office the Internet link it provides will be what you are going to use and any good DSL router should do...

Hi AIT
You need a Modem-Router that has port forwarding features. Most of them does have it anyway. Then you need a way to update your DynDNS (since your IP address will change often) if you want to access your PC from the "Road" The DynDNS updates can also be done from the PC itself.
If you just need to access file on your PC, I would run a ftp server, if you need to access the desktop I would rather opt for UtlraVNC or TightVNC and NOT RealVNC since you can run the session in compressed mode that would increase the access speed and reduce the data needed to keep the link alive. If you connect from a modem or 3G(billed per meg) the benefit will be obvious.

A good all rounder ADSL MODEM ROUTER is the Netgear.

Another good alrounder ADSL MODEM ROUTER is the Billion 5102

Supports Port forwarding, is able to be totally stealthed to unautherised access, has a build in DynDNS manager, and is really simple to setup. Also pricing is very favourable.

If you need wireless functionality too then the 7202G is also a good base to start from.

If you need more advanced features then the 7402G is also an excellent choice
