Most of the industry uses kilobit...
yes, I think its dressing it up to make it look better than it ACTUALLY is, as nothing transfers 'bits'
384kbit/Sec = 48kBytes/Sec

Are line speeds guaranteed in any way? I mean to a certain degree of course. Let's say you don't get at least 35kBytes/Sec on a 384kbit/Sec line, will Telkom do anything to rectify this?

Would also like to know!. Telkom offers best guarentee once connected to Internet, due to vagaries of various websites. What I would like to know is there any way of ensuring or checking that you are getting the line speed you are paying for between point of installation and Exchange/DSLAM. I am paying for 512 is there some I check that between my house and exchange I get 512, nevermind what I get on the net? :(

The naivity is almost cute :)

Zeb, are you a recent immigrant to the country or something? :D

The only thing Telkom will guarentee is that they will screw you over one way or another.

Turbo Aspiration. What I'm trying to find out is if there is any guarentee on the speed I get is the speed I pay for. I pay for 512KBps. I understand that once on the net my speed cannot be guarenteed due to vagaries of websites on the WWW. What I need to know is that the speed between my residence and Telkom exchange is correct ie is it 512Kbps or is this impossible to measure?

Sorry TonyA, my apologies if I come off sounding like one of those people you want to strangle at the first opportunity. I am in such a bizarre mood today, and believe me, I want to strangle myself as I am actually annoying myself right now. Be thankful you are not me: I have to live with me!

Right-e-o then, now that we have cleared that up....

Nothing from Telkom is guarenteed as far as I am aware. They do NOT guarentee line speeds. They do not even guarentee that the network will be up even 1% of the time. Telkom makes promises on their websites and in their adverts, but when it comes to putting these promises onto paper in the form of a contract or a Service Level Agreement (SLA) they refuse to do so.

Take a look at the transcripts from the 2005 ICASA ADSL hearings for what Telkom employees had to say about the non-existence of SLAs (which are standard in other countries).

Telkom is above the law (FACT! No one else find it strange that they gained so many exemptions from the Public Finance Management Act?? Or that certain rules of the JSE are allowed to be broken by Telkom alone? *ahem golden shares, ahem*)

Telkom is also above the highest law of the land (not even Mbeki or Felicia Mabuzo-Suttle is above the constitution!)....Telkom outright refuses to consent to the supremacy of the Bill of Rights in our Constitution (no, I am not making this up, but the alleged unconstitutionality of the Telkom contract is a subject for another day).

Hi Zeb. You can check your modems sync rate. Should be 2 meg +-.
You can also request logs fro your ISP. The logs should indicate your modem speed.

Sample line :
1 Thu Jan 12 04:02:47 2006 Thu Jan 12 09:45:20 2006 20553 196.43.27.16 7/0/0-8/307 165.146.141.25 1024000/1024000 NA/NA 659594232 111500643

Thanks xdsluser, but what I actually mean is this. If my Telkom 384 or 512 line does not give me a speed close to 384 or 512, will Telkom do something about it if I call them?

Yes. They will also apologise, refund your money, provide you with free tickets to the ice capades, and send you roses just to say sorry for the hassle and to make sure you know that they care.

I suggest u downgrade your package if ur not getting the speeds u r paying for. The only thing telkom will "care" about is your line syncing and u r provided a "service" How fast that service is is your problem, not theirs. Im afraid this is how telkom works. You'll be lucky if they fix any problems u hav

OMG Deb :p you're in a crazy mood!!! :D

I don't believe you get any guarentees on any ADSL product worldwide, as it is a best effort shared service (?) with mainly high contention ratios, which is highly dependant on a number of factors outside the ISP's control.
"My ADSL is only running at 384kbps, I pay for 1mbps"
"Alright sir, we'll send the crane and move your house closer to the exchange"
:)

If you need dedicated bandwidth with a guarentee, you enter the world of fixed lines and diginets.

Well, at least I now know not to waste a precious hour on hold with the idea in my mind to actually get what I pay for. :)

Ok cool, now you are *getting* it!

Also, telkom offer their lines at 192kb, 384kb, 512kb and 1024kb. Thats kilobit. A 1024kilo bit line is only 128KiloBytes.
