ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
Electrical Engineering entails the generation, distribution and utilisation of electrical energy. This includes subjects such as alternative sources of energy (wind, water, sun, energy), protection and power network stability, power network design and management, electrical propulsion (hybrid and electric vehicles such as cars and motorcycles), control systems to control any type of motor and system (e.g. speed, braking, steering, suspension, gear box and stability control of motor cars), large electrical plants in buildings, factories and townships, etc.

Electrical Engineers most often work for firms such as automobile manufacturers, City Councils, Consulting Engineering Firms, CSIR, ESKOM, ISCOR, LGI, Powertech, SASOL, TELKOM, mines and factories and in a large variety of other firms including electronic and computer firms.

ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING
Electronic Engineering primarily entails the generation and dissemination fo information through electronic systems and subsystems. All the principles of the world of electronics are used. These include basic electronic components and systems (e.g. amplifiers, transmitters, receivers, microprocessors, computers, computer systems, power sources, inverters) and also complete and custom-made systems such as user electronics (TV, cellular telephones, radios, microwave ovens, hi-fi systems), car electronics (ABS, speed control, fuel injection), process control systems, electronic warfare avionics, navigational equipment (GPS), information systems, industrial measuring and control systems, entertainment, speech and visual recognition systems and many more. Furthermore, bio-engineering and photonics are also addressed as subsections of Electronic Engineering.

Electronic Engineers most often work with firms such as Altech, Anglo American, CSIR, De Beers, Denel, Grintek, Kentron, LGI, Mintek, MTN, Philips, Plessey, Siemens, Telkom, Vodacom and many other firms including electrical and computer firms.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING
Computer Engineering represents the combined fields of Information and Communication Technology (IT and ICT). This includes computer systems, software engineering and telecommunication systems. Microprocessors, computers, computer networks and computer network equipment, transmitters, receivers, antennas, microwave networks and optical fibres are discussed under equipment. Subjects such as computer programming, operating systems, the Internet, teletraffic engineering, data security and signal processing are addressed under the theoretical principles. All systems that form part of the design, installation, commissioning and management of systems forming part of the Information Super Highway form part of Computer Engineering.

Computer Engineers most often work with firms such as Alcatel, Azisa, Cisco, Datatech, Dimension Data, IBM, ICL, LGI, MTN, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Q-Data, Silicon Graphics, Vodacom, Sun MicroSystems and any firm where data and/or communication networks are operated and these include almost all organisations, firms and institutions - (WANs, MANs, LANs, Micro LANs, etc).

Yeah. I had him in first year calculus. I remember that knob on the back of his head. He talked faster than a Ferrari on NOS and wrote even faster, but he knew his stuff...

We always laughed at that knob. Can't remember all the jokes but it was a good time.

I had Ronelle for engineering graphics as well as for my first CCNA semester. I haven't seen her again after that. Is she still there by any chance?

I can't actually remember what I had her for... :-/ Pretty sure I had her though. Definitely didn't have her for CCNA though... Had Willem for that. The old balie's still going strong, AFAIK. For graphics I had Camisani

Edit: Ooh, I think it was optics... I remember the .mov files she provided of her lectures... Snooze fest

Oh OK. Whew. Ronelle didn't give the classes or whatever for CCNA, she was only like the "lecturer". I rarely saw her there anyways. WvJ is one of the good guys....
I never had Camisani for class. Seen him a couple of times though.
I remember how bad graphics was. I had Technical Drawing at school, did very well in it, but failed both semester tests... luckily I got around 80 for the exam...

Graphics was one of those subjects that people don't care about, so you neglect it and almost fail :p

But one of the worst lecturers I had was the two physics ones... luckily they always used past papers for tests, exams, practicals, class tests and tutorials.... made it so much easier.
What we used to do for the tuts was to copy the memo onto notepad page 2, then write the tut test on page 1. When we were done, we'd simply tear out page 2.... :D

Past papers were a godsend when it came to the maths... Alas, I didn't pick up on it in first year, so Physics was an uphill struggle. Luckily I passed... And somehow did quite well too :p

And let's not forget Alberts' fringe lectures on how coming to class on time is in everyone's best interests. And going on for 20mins about how little time there is when he could have done 20mins extra work :-/

I think I had one of those once...
I had friends doing COS131 (electronic engineers, so 2nd year) who gave me past papers... so luckily I had some going my way...
 
I do remember that in the PIE EIP book they wrote the book in Afrikaans and translated into English (and made millions upon millions of spelling mistakes :D)

Electronic Engineer is basically someone that works and can repair circuit boards and even create them, those of motherboards, televisions, gaming consoles and the list goes on.

I am an electronics engineer, and these are my duties:

1- design and testing of various analog and digital electronic circuits going into
garage door openers
gate motors
alarm systems
internet appliances
audio systems
home automation
remote control systems

2 - prototyping and review of designed circuits
- Destructive and non-destructive testing
- Testing and verification to standards (SABS/IEC/EMC Directive i.e. "CE" mark)
3 - schematic capture of designed and tested circuits
4 - PCB layout
- Prototype verification
- Gerber layer preparation and submission to Chinese manufacturers
- Paste stencil generation
- Generation of data for pick and place staff
- Assembly instruction for the line
5 - Design and implementation if CPLD and FPGAs are used, this is done in VHDL
6 - Software development if circuits use microcontrollers, this is done in ASM and/or C
7 - Technical drawings of plastic components for:
- optical encoders
- mountings
- safety covers
- push buttons and actuators
- display lenses and LCD lenses and backlight schemes
8 - Texts for user and installation manuals
9 - Direction and setup and instruction of installation videos applicable to some products
10 - Cost reviews and supplier liasions

I obtained an average of 76% and have been included to the dean's list. If anyone here knows of local companies that offer good bursaries for students please reply to this post.

My main problem is identifying a company in South Africa that actually employs Computer Engineers to work with hardware, not to be employed as Software Engineers or Network Engineers.

I am aware that bursaries at most companies have closed for 2011, thus this is more research for 2012.

5dt, Parsec, CSIR, Denel, etc, would be where I'd look for bursaries.
