Over the years i for one reason or another changed routers and ended up with about 4 or 5 extra routers.
I have only sold one and gave away another.
The rest i have done the following at one time or another.
- Connected to my current router to increase available Lan ports and boost Wifi signal on same SSID
- Installed custom firmware DDWRT to turn router into wireless bridge or Repeater
-and my overly complicated setup a combination of above with different SSID *with reason to not decrease wifi speed.

Fortunately the fate of my old router was decided for me.

I was staying at a different place and the extension lead I had popped. I saw flames briefly.

After changing my underwear, I realised that the shorting out lead took out part of my router. The lights just flashed. It became a vegetable. It was pretty much unresponsive in all ways.

So I binned it.

RIP random gigabyte router.

You can use them as Access points meshed with your main router. Boosting your WiFi signal all over the house

This all depends on how sophisticated your new and old routers are.

If your routers can run OpenWRT or Tomato then you are in luck

I only replace mine when Thor strikes them down. So they go into the general recycling bin.

Initially did the same - setup a mesh (mess?) of interconnected routers till one day I just got fed up with it all and got a Ubiquiti.

Still have one spare (I think) but gave all the others away to people who needed a router for one reason or the other.
