What do you experience after decapitation?

EEG, ERP, MEG, MRI might shed some light on the issue. You will just have to contain the head when chopping it off.

Makes sense... but I kind of understand why they haven't done that sort of experiment before... how would you get someone to have his head cut off inside an MRI machine?

It's clear no-one had read the article I linked to my first post earlier.

They did do it with mice, hence this whole discussion.

Maybe one of those okes on death row in the US will volunteer for the greater good of science. They will just have to use a ceramic blade.

That link I placed in my first post ... I'm playing that old game Delta Force at the moment ... for nostalgia's sake. Anyway I googled the American Delta Force unit and got to "howstuffworks" explaining how the Delta Force setup works. On that page my eye caught a link to the article about decapitation that I placed in my first post.

Did You Know that Delta Force is the most elite and secretive special forces unit in the US miltary. The team is made of operators (they don't consider themselves soldiers) from across the US military spectrum.

I recently read a book called elephants on acid and other experiments.
They have kept a dog's head alive by attaching it to a heart/lung machine. It reacted to light etc..

Soviet physician Sergei Brukhonenko developed a primitive heart-lung machine he called an "autojector," and with this device he succeeded in keeping the severed head of a dog alive. He displayed one of his living dog heads in 1928 before an international audience of scientists at the Third Congress of Physiologists of the USSR. To prove that the head lying on the table really was alive, he showed that it reacted to stimuli. Brukhonenko banged a hammer on the table, and the head flinched. He shone light in its eyes, and the eyes blinked. He even fed the head a piece of cheese, which promptly popped out the esophageal tube on the other end.

However, it was investigated that straight after decapitation...there is pretty much nothing happening
 
But my question is, why? What causes the brain to stop functioning.

I think the mixture of shock, massive loss of blood, no oxygen, loss of pressure etc would pretty much end all functioning extremely quickly.
 
i dont think you'll be awake and aware with a traumatic amputation. you'll definitely get a vasovagal type reaction - consciousness and higher funtions are dropped for the sake of preserving vital funtions - ie cortex vs midbrain and brainstem. heh, kinda futile in that scenario i guess.

Shish, you'd think the body would be awake at such a point. Instead it pretty much shuts down and hopes for the best
