What does one need to have a feed from telkom's ATM network? Just out of curiosity, I've always wanted to know. And ofcourse how much does this all cost (estimation). In a simple question, take IS for example. What did they have to get from Telkom to do ADSL authentication and networking?

Lots of cash. In hardware I do not know, Racks of servers connected to Telkom network I presume, and as you are conneted to the cloud (ATM?) a umbrella to shield you against the TELKOM sharks, try Santam.
I read somewhere today IS is paying 250K/month for their link or share of the pipe.

Telkom IPC links all inclusive ex. vat range from just under R16,000 for 2 Mbit Diginet to just under R400,000 for 155 Mbit ATM per month.

16K for a 2mb diginet link isn't bad. but then again that can hold, what? maybe 6x 512k ADSL clients? And then you still need 2mb internet connection which is not rationed like that SAIX silver and bronze stuff.

Ok, so that all leads to a rough estimate of R100K for 2x 2mb diginet, and a SAIX 2mb Gold package.

and 6x ADSL clients @ R199 per month can not cover that. So the questio is, how does the big boys do it?

I suppose satelite would bring the costs down substantially. One can get a 4mb satelite for R26K/month..

Question still remains tho.. 6x199=R1194/m

I suppose who uses their ADSL 24/7 ? In that respect, downloading a 1000GB file every second of every day. Then you also have the hard cap and that other good stuff, so I suppose it works out.

Now that contention, 20:1. In what respect? 20 users to 1 user speed? As in 20x512 clients using up a full 1x512 line? Or 20 users per 2mb line? (that woul make more sense).

prob 20 users using 2mb line... But telkom has not released the contention rations so they counld be anything. 20:1 is the min. prob more than that. Thats prob why it slows down during the day.

Weren't those contention ratios meant to be made public?

Sarcasm

Weren't Telkom supposed to provide us with affordable telecommunications?
Wasn't the SNO supposed to be launched two years ago?

Etc

[/sarcasm off]

Try probably closer to 100:1, that is 100 users per 512kbps.

can't be that... even if just 2 people are downloading an ftp file (out of 100 which is very easy to assume) the line would be dead... a 2 mb line or so should be shared between a certain number of people, or no one would get a good speed.

unless they have MAJOR proxy caches. Something like Terrabytes?

I mean SAIX probably have a massive array of proxies that transparently cache EVERYTHING. so the question really is, how much of DSL is true internet speed?

lets assume you have a 2mb diginet from telkom @ R16000/m

And you have an upstream satelite link of 4mb @ R30000/m

*Forget local peering*

Even at 100:1 contention, you still wouldn't be able to cover the costs of operation.

100:1 - 100xR199=R19900/m.

At operating costs of R46000/m, you would need to squeeze about 240 users onto your measly 2mb line. Not to mention you still need to pay rent and basic operating costs such as electricity and water (for coffee). as well as a telephone line to cope with all the users squealing aobut slow speeds.

ITS INSANE.

I mean the routers themselves cost about R40000 on its own. As well as a few servers for authentication, proxy, traffic control (suppose cisco could handle this), DNS, email.
