My interpreration - he had a bad unexpected experience which knocked him sideways.

The resulting emotions of sadness, anger annd desire for revenge he now determines to overcome. He's putting it all behind him, moving on and working on being happy again (looking at the sun).

This is pretty much What I Think.

He thought he had everything sorted out and know what life is about. Then something happened and his life got ripped from under him like a rug. Now as he gets older he realizes their is not a lot of people left around, probably lost touch because of the direction his life was heading in.

He probably sees that the life he lived in was blissful ignorance and now that he does not have that feeling that he is on top of the world any more. He sees others around him and realizes their struggles; and chooses to keep his chin up even though he has lost what was important to him. He Then decides its time for him to let what happened go and to keep his head high even though he feels like he is in the dumps.
