Yesterday afternoon around 16:30 I had almost no linespeed at all (4mb MWEB uncapped premium). After resetting the router still nothing, couldnt even get to the MWEB ADSL page. Phoned in, they reset my port and my account, and speeds back to normal.

Now this is something I have to do at least 2-3 times a week. Torrents are still downloading at a bismal 23kbp-40kbps though.

So, what does a "port reset' do?

the DSLAM "learns" over time as to what the best sync speed is for your line as it attempts to keep your connection stable (= sync profile). If there is non-linear interference and abrupt noise, even this "learning" algorithm can break down.

A port reset does just that, it resets the DSLAM port you are using and it begins the process all over again, assuming you have a squeaky clean line and adjusting for noise from there.

So what sometimes helps is to lower the sync speed of your line. Even if you have a 4mb line, I often find the default sync speed is 10mb, which hightens the noise ratios. Get hold of Telkom and ensure your line syncs at 4mb, which would lower the noise ratio and may end your need for port resets.
