What does the SANDF do ?

In the 70's we were fighting 'iewers op die grens'.

Apart from that I recall a bit of a cock-up in Lesotho for a day or two.

As far as I know some forces are currently deployed in Central Africa -

but what do the rest of our military forces actually do ?

Training of course - but for what ? Nobody wants to invade us and we dont want to invade anywhere.
So we have air force, navy, army and medics who must be bored out of their skulls. The airforce seems to conduct tests now and then as does the navy. I cannot recall when last I saw a live soldier in uniform anywhere.

I don't know what the Defence budget is but probably substantial at the very least - so what do we get for our money , and do we really need the SANDF.

The general rule is that a military force is not supposed to be used against its own citizens unless martial law is implemented - but is it not time to make an exception and use them for anti-crime measures.
 
Agreed, I can't remember when I saw one either. Our millitary is only there for show. To represent Africa and the success of our country.. Personally, in this day and age, any country that has people who are starving or living on the streets, shouldn't be wasting money on millitary. I understand America, Russia, China.. But they could obviously all swat us like a fly, so exactly what is the point of having a millitary when it can be beaten on the nose with a newspaper by three quarters of the world? Waste of money IMO. We don't need submarines and jets, yet we buy them. We have Nukes aimed at us by all of the countries who own enuf nukes to go around. If we piss the wrong people off, we wouldn't last 2 minutes..

I dunno if using the millitary for anti crime measures would work or not =P Maybe

Although about 2 months ago there was a huge military exercise here in Bloem to "Prepare for possible terrorist attacks in SA in 2010"
 
The SANDF is impotent. Severly ill-disciplined individuals [who now have a union iirc] and from a battle readiness point of view they would have trouble organising a pissup in a brewery. The number of individuals with AIDS is surprisingly high for armed forces.
 
The SADF will never be what it was, unless we go to war again.
There is no reason for us to maintain that level of combat readiness anymore.

You have to ask the comrades about all that fancy military kit they bought though, when they were supposed to be building everyone houses.
 
They all seem to be having parties and wild sex orgies in their barracks.
 
Let be serious here, the budget the SANDF has is for Zuma and Schabeers kitty.
 
I was also thinking that they could help fight crime. Accompany police on raids / patrols, set up road blocks etc. I remember reading somewhere that the SANDF is 40% strong at any one time, the rest are sick, off duty or on light duty. What a waste of my money, Trevor could rather let me pay less tax.
 
IMO, any country that has an army is money well spent. You never know who might want to pick a fight with you. :D

Rather to provide a detterrance (sp?) to outside forces. Albeit in our case some countries would be able to wipe the floor with us, it is there none the less.
 
The only good the SANDF will do in a war, is if they cut themselves and run at the enemy shouting "I am HIV+"
 
I don't think any country would find the SANDF a deterrent... they're beyond useless.

They should be put to good use and assist SAPS in raids and patrols. Or patrol our borders to catch the hordes of illegal immigrants coming in and the hijackers taking our vehicles out.
 
Well while in the Navy, we actually did quite alot.

If any ship and it's crew wish to go to the Antarctic by passing cape point, they MUST have the support of the SA Navy.
We also did rescue missions in the floods in Bangladesh, and assisted the Airforce in Mozambique during their missions there.

The Navy does patrols off our coast against poachers, because they are too well armed for a simple police unit ;)

The Army is pathetic. They almost do NOTHING. They are as disorganized as anything.

Answer is: The Airforce and Navy are fine BUT, don't rely on the Army for anything... use pitchforks if push comes to shove...
 
The airforce are also quiet lately, we used to have fighter jets flying over our house all the time! Run outta petrol? Or maybe its too expensive!
PS, I dont live in Iraq! lol
