Hi guys,

I am setting up a website and I have been going around asking for link exchanges.

What does a 3 way exchange exactly mean??

Thanks :)

This is google's advice to webmasters:
"..Excessive link exchanges, could "negatively impact your site's ranking in search results."

"Don't participate in link schemes designed to incréase your site's ranking or Page Rank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or 'bad neighborhoods' on the web, as your ranking may be affected adversely by those links."

"Some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results."

"The best way to get other sites to create relevant links to yours is to create unique, relevant content that can quickly gain popularity in the Internet community. The more useful content you have, the greater the chances someone else will find that content valuable to their readers and link to it."

My thoughts: link exchanges can be useful as they help google to understand what your site is about, especially if its new. But the above statements say some of the links you exchanged may count against you. Its useful for a new site, but not useful as a long term link building strategy.

Oh okay I see, so the only way to "get the word out" on my site when i am finished building it, is to pay for advertisng through google adwords or a similar scheme.

Also, depending on the content of your site, if you, for example add a blog section, and frequently blog about your subject matter, and make sure nothing is copy/pasted, but rather unique content, google will like your site more and more. They're constantly drumming in that point, content content content - obviously, if your site is just a store, than you'll need ads to compete with the established sites, but even with a store, you can set it up to have user reviews of items, and your own reviews or blog about the stuff. But ultimately it takes time and good content.

Thanks for the Advice. Basically, im leading my site to "doom" if I establish link exchanges with other websites. Do I have to use Google Webmaster tools to help me promote my site? My site already appears in google search. My site has got its own content (own news and reviews) but video's are from youtube.
